A LEC bypass technique which provides analog voice grade communications from a caller to an independent Central Office (CO) for local services and/or to a long distance inter-exchange carrier ("IXC") for long distance services by utilizing existing tariffed network data services and existing tariffed commercial DID/DOD services. The telephone switching equipment of an Independent Central Office is located in a new residential housing development (single detached, attached, or multi-family) or a new commercial development and used to provide local and long distance calling services, as well as Internet access and other telecommunications services, to the residents of the residential housing development or the tenants of the commercial development. The long distance service is provided using a hardwired LEC bypass connection that does not pass through the voice tariffed switch operated by the LEC, while the local service within the development as well as local service via the public switched network is provided via DID/DOD trunks purchased from the LEC and unbundled for use by the residents in the residential development or tenants in the commercial development. Residents in other new housing or commercial developments may also be serviced by the Independent Central Office by installing a D4 multiplexer on-site at the development and connecting to the Independent Central Office using the same LEC bypass techniques used for long distance access.

A paging network (10) is disclosed which utilizes a plurality of distributed switches (12, 14 and 16) to transmit pages on a non-real time basis to achieve efficient and low cost transmission. Each of the switches processes packets of pages received from the network. Each of the switches also processes pages into packets of pages to be transmitted to another switch in the network or into batches of pages to be transmitted by a local paging service if the switch is a local switch. The network dynamically programs the reception frequency of the paging receivers in response to traffic conditions of a local switch or in accordance with service options specified by a subscriber to a local paging service. The digits of the paging receiver identification code are transmitted in an order of increasing significance to conserve battery life of the paging receivers. Pages may be initiated by placing a local call to any lata switch in the network and service options may be varied by placing of a local call to a lata switch.

The digits of the paging receiver identification code are transmitted in an order of increasing significance to conserve battery life of the paging receivers. Pages may be initiated by placing a local call to any lata switch in the network and service options may be varied by placing of a local call to a lata switch.

Paging system hub switch

A technique for bypassing a local exchange carrier ("LEC") so as to reduce or eliminate the access charges typically payable by an interexchange carrier ("IXC") to a LEC, and, in turn, payable by the subscriber to the IXC, for originating long distance calls. A hardwire connection is provided between the IXC and/or a Central Office operated independent of the LEC and the customer premises by purchasing analog facilities from the LEC which originate at the Central Office and connecting these facilities directly to a multiplexer. The terminating end of the analog facilities are installed at the subscriber premises. The voice interface modules typically used in the multiplexer are replaced by Foreign Exchange Subscriber (FXS) modules which perform A/D conversion of the analog voice data provided over the analog facilities from the customer premises. The terminating end of a T1 or higher capacity digital facility is terminated on the multiplexer and on a K01 digital electronic cross-connect system (DEXCS) frame at the LEC Central Office. A T1 is also ordered from the LEC to connect the DEXCS either directly to the IXC or to the independent Central Office. Each of the channels of the T1 lines are configured by the customer using a network reconfiguration service with FXS Loop Start signaling.

Method and apparatus for bypassing a local exchange carrier to permit an independent central office to provide local calling services

A communications platform for enabling the cost-effective deployment of fixed wireless local loop telephone services to residential and commercial subscribers. The platform includes at least one Independent Central Office located within a new residential or commercial development, and connected to the public switched telephone network (PSTN), at least one subscriber base station, and subscriber terminals communicating with the fixed network via a fixed wireless local loop radio path. The customer premise equipment of the telephone subscriber is connected to a switch at the Independent Central Office facility via the fixed wireless local loop radio path, and the switch at the Independent Central Office facility is connected to the incumbent local exchange carrier (LEC) switch at the LEC Central Office facility via direct inward dialing (DID) and direct outbound dialing (DOD) services provided via respective DID and DOD trunk lines. Deployment costs of the Independent Central Office fixed wireless local loop platform are absorbed by building the platform in new residential and/or commercial developments and providing the platform as part of the new communications infrastructure.

To convert an analog communication between two local access transport areas (LATA's) from one charged at multiple inter-LATA rates to one charged at a single inter-LATA rate plus lower intra-LATA rates, the communication is concentrated within the remote LATA by installing a remote demarcation point connected to a central office and by installing a master station demarcation point and the master station demarcation point are interfaced by an analog concentrator. The analog concentrator couples the analog communication signals by appropriately amplifying them without digital conversion or processing.
