This study examined patterns of political participation among a sample of community-based, urban elderly adults. The data revealed an ongoing pattern of high voting turnout and moderate involvement in campaign activities, community groups, and personalized contacts with legislators. When compared with the previous 25 years, the frequency of party identification and issue group membership increased in old age, whereas all other nonvoting forms of political activity declined Implications are discussed in terms of empowerment, intergenerational conflict, and party alignments.

The move towards web-enhanced or online learning offers not only new opportunities, but also new challenges for both instructors and students (Downing & Dyment, 2013). There is a need for knowledge of how to work effectively online, and effective preparation of high-quality instructors is of fundamental importance to meet the diverse needs of learners. This is particularly important in the field of teacher education where the instructor is modelling appropriate pedagogical practices that may in turn be picked up by the pre-service teachers as part of their practices when teaching with technology.

A Pedagogical Continuum: The Journey from Face-to-Face to Online Teaching

Older people became a highly visible force in the American politics of the 1930s. The Townsend organisation mobilised one tenth of the U.S. elderly population prior to their direct representation in the polity as an interest group. This article utilises several theoretical social movement models to analyse how and why mobilisation occurred. It demonstrates that many factors, including phenomena associated with the social dimension of age, influenced the mechanisms of mobilisation and the movement's shape. Characteristics of this cohort of older people, including its size, life expectancy, spatial distribution, shared traditions, and symbolic frameworks were conducive to club formation and mobilisation. The period event of the Depression also triggered collective action, by exacerbating trends of changing old-age institutional supports. But the organisation expanded most where it channelled inducements to participants and evoked the cohorts' symbolic frameworks and ideals. Mobilisation also occurred within a political environment, the national stage of U.S. politics, where non-represented interest groups (such as elderly people) find it difficult to receive benefits.

An Age-Based Mobilisation: The Emergence of Old Age in American Politics

Current literature on the over use of psychoactive drugs by elderly people suggests that alienation, poverty, rolelessness and lack of drug experience in earlier life are principal causes. But these are mainly empirical observations which have not been ordered into any theoretical framework. In proposing the applicability of the concept of ‘internal colonialism’ as a mode of explanation, the paper presents a survey of drug use prevalence as a basis for later conceptual analysis. It is concluded that drug misuse is an institutionalized response which perpetuates dependency.
