Oxidative treatment of bromide-containing waters: formation of bromine and its reactions with inorganic and organic compounds--a critical review.

Recent observations have revealed that magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves and oscillations are ubiquitous in the solar atmosphere, with a wide range of periods. We give a brief review of some aspects of MHD waves and coronal seismology that have recently been the focus of intense debate or are newly emerging. In particular, we focus on four topics: (i) the current controversy surrounding propagating intensity perturbations along coronal loops, (ii) the interpretation of propagating transverse loop oscillations, (iii) the ongoing search for coronal (torsional) Alfven waves, and (iv) the rapidly developing topic of quasi-periodic pulsations in solar flares.

Magnetohydrodynamic waves and coronal seismology: an overview of recent results

This study investigated the sensitivity of managed boreal forests to climate change, with consequent needs to adapt the management to climate change. Model simulations representing the Finnish territory between 60 and 708 N showed that climate change may substantially change the dynamics of managed boreal forests in northern Europe. This is especially probable at the northern and southern edges of this forest zone. In the north, forest growth may increase, but the special features of northern forests may be diminished. In the south, climate change may create a suboptimal environment for Norway spruce. Dominance of Scots pine may increase on less fertile sites currently occupied by Norway spruce. Birches may compete with Scots pine even in these sites and the dominance of birches may increase. These changes may reduce the total forest growth locally but, over the whole of Finland, total forest growth may increase by 44%, with an increase of 82% in the potential cutting drain. The choice of appropriate species and reduced rotation length may sustain the productivity of forest land under climate change.

The kinetics of the reactions between Fe(III) and mono-, di-, and trichloroacetic acids have been investigated at 25°C and an ionic strength of 1 M, using the T-jump method. The rate constants for the reaction between Fe(OH)2+ and the anions of the acids exhibited values which are “normal” for this cation. Assuming those between Fe(OH)2+ and the undissociated acids to be also normal, the rate constants for the reaction of Fe3+ with the anions were evaluated, and found to depend on the basic strength of the ligand. For the rate constants of the reaction between Fe3+ and the undissociated acids, only very approximate values could be estimated. The results are compared with the rate of water exchange. The formation constants of the complexes were measured using a spectrophotometric method.
