Reducing the Digital Divide: Connecting Older Adults to iPad Technology.

Using information and communication technologies (ICTs) can improve older adults' quality of life. ICT use is associated with decreased feelings of loneliness and depression, along with increased feelings of independence and personal growth. However, limited access and low technological self-efficacy are key reasons why some groups, especially older adults, are excluded from being fully engaged in the digital world. In this study, we focus on older adults' technological self-efficacy, which is related to their actual use of technology and the second level digital divide. Specifically, we examine: 1) how older adults decide to use a new technology, tablet computers; 2) how they conquer the barrier of technological self-efficacy through using tablets; and 3) the impacts of using this new technology in their lives. Twenty-one in-depth interviews were conducted with older adults residing in independent living communities in a medium-sized city in the Deep South region of the United States. Observational and enactive learning played important roles for older adults in using tablets. Seeing others use tablets, getting recommendations from family members, or having tablets given to them were the primary reasons they started to use tablet computers. The ease of use feature of tablets helped solve the problem of lacking technological self-efficacy. Using tablets helped increase a sense of connectedness. Tablet computers may be one way to increase digital inclusion among older adults.

Getting Grandma Online: Are Tablets the Answer for Increasing Digital Inclusion for Older Adults in the U.S.?

To become an information society, it is required that the citizens have access to information and communication technologies (ICT) in appropriate ways. ICT plays a major role to improve inclusion of various parts of the society (such as children, disabled citizens, and elderly) into daily life. According to reports of WHO, the world population is getting older. This urges the need for a systematic investigation of ICT needs of elderly citizens and potential problems being faced during the course of interaction with ICT interfaces. The present study focuses on the use and acceptance of ICT by elderly citizens in comparison to younger adults by providing data from citizens living in Turkey. It reports data collected from 232 elderly participants (60–96 years old) and 235 younger adults (19–40 years old). The findings of the study show that, both elderly and younger adults confirm the technology acceptance model (TAM) in a similar way. This was accompanied by elderly citizens’ need for assistance, encouragement and friendlier interface designs. The present study aims to contribute towards increasing awareness about the needs and expectations of elderly citizens and inspire further research on ICT use of the elderly population.

The use and acceptance of ICT by senior citizens: a comparison of technology acceptance model (TAM) for elderly and young adults

The internet of things (IoT) aims to extend the internet to real-world objects, connecting smart and sensing devices into a global network infrastructure by connecting physical and virtual objects. The IoT has the potential to increase the quality of life of inhabitants and users of intelligent ambient assisted living (AAL) environments. The paper overviews and discusses the IoT technologies and their foreseen impacts and challenges for the AAL domain. The results of this review are summarized as the IoT based gerontechnology acceptance model for the assisted living domain. The model focuses on the acceptance of new technologies by older people and underscores the need for the adoption of the IoT for the AAL domain.

A Review of Internet of Things Technologies for Ambient Assisted Living Environments

In a context of progressive loss of intellectual and interactional capacities for the elderly, the goal of this paper is to examine to what extent a new technological environment can improve their quality of life. In this study we examine the very elderly (mean age 87) who have experienced a loss in functional capacities and are dependent on managed care such as residential home care units (RHCU). Using qualitative methods amongst a group of 17 residents (semi-structured interviews and longitudinal observations), we examine whether new social practices form and whether subjects feel more socially recognized. Our study shows that information and communication technologies (ICT) may, to some extent, play an instrumental role in interconnectedness and social stimulation, and can also be seen as a "boundary object" that communicates between the residents' world (who are rather isolated) and their families' world (including grandchildren).
