This paper is based on a study of 391 family-business-owning couples where the husband is the business owner. The purpose of the study was to examine the work involvement of the wife in the business, the business tensions, and the impact of those tensions on family business success. Fifty-seven percent of wives worked in the business, 47% of whom were paid. Forty-two percent of wives were considered major decision makers. Having more than one decision maker in the business impacted certain types of inclusion tension. Business and family success outcomes varied by level of tensions. There was initial evidence of a threshold where business tensions begin to affect business success negatively.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships among business tensions, relationship conflict quality, and satisfaction with spouse for 206 farm business-owning couples. The Sustainable Family Business Model and the Family FIRO (Fundamental Interpersonal Relations Orientation) model guided the path analysis. For both husbands and wives, locus of control was negatively related to business tensions; decision involvement discrepancy was positively related to relationship conflict quality; and business tensions were negatively related to relationship conflict quality. For husbands, relationship conflict quality was positively related to satisfaction with spouse; for wives, business tensions were negatively related to satisfaction with business-owning spouse.

Farm Business-Owning Couples: Interrelationships among Business Tensions, Relationship Conflict Quality, and Spousal Satisfaction

The effects of the length of the employed wife's employment day on her time in household work activities were examined for 362 wives in a 1967–68 Syracuse, New York, time-use study. This research is based on a household time allocation model which assumes employment status and length of employment day are outside the realm of families’choices when making daily time-use decisions. Incorporation of this assumption permits a theoretically and statistically valid empirical examination of the effects of length of employment day on time in household work for the first time. Employment effects were estimated at five stages in the life cycle by multiple regression using a logistic function. The effects on wives’daily time were negative for all activities except yard and car care, nonphysical family care, and marketing and chauffeuring. Increases in wives’daily nonphysical care time were greater than their decreases in physical care time for all families except those with only preschool age children. The novel results of this research indicate employment status may not be a suitable substitute measure for employment time. The results also cast suspicion on the results of time-use studies which aggregate employed and nonemployed wives. The results also support the superior performance of nonlinear functions in explaining household time use.

For wives, managing finances and tension over finances predicted decision involvement, income adequacy perception predicted assertive conflict mode, and age, off-farm employment, income adequacy perception, locus of control, managing finances and tensions over finances predicted goal achievement. For husbands, age, off-farm employment, and managing finances predicted financial decision involvement, tensions over finances predicted assertive conflict mode, and age, off-farm employment, locus of control, income adequacy perception, and assertive conflict mode predicted goal achievement.

Time devoted by women to selected household tasks, 1975-1981: implications for assessing change in standards

It is the contention of this paper that home management should have its own distinctive conceptual framework and that it should concern itself not only with the ideal organization of the home, but also with actual home management practices. Systems theory, because it is a coordinating model based on cooperative relationships, does not provide the basis for an adequate conceptual framework. Home management theory must include concepts such as conflict, power, authority and ideology if it is to understand and to change existing home management practices.
