Stained-glass is a craft with a wealth of opportunities that blends seamlessly into our everyday environments. Despite sharing similar tools and materials with other types of hybrid crafting, authentic stained glass is underexplored in HCI. We introduce stained-glass to TUI researchers, explain the fabrication process thoroughly (using the traditional methods of both copper foil and lead came), and explore its potential as a conductive substrate for interactivity. We contribute fabrication techniques to support various circuit connection traces, light diffusion methods, interactivities, and aesthetic qualities. We also introduce three potential applications as proof of method validity in different contexts. We follow this with a discussion on experiential outcomes and the importance of creative practices in the development of interactive artefacts.

Interactive Stained-Glass: Exploring a new design space of traditional hybrid crafts for novel fabrication methods

The HCI community has been actively developing and studying the use of Personal Informatics (PI) systems. While celebrating the headways, researchers have uncovered many unintended consequences of using PI systems, such as data-induced stress and obsessive tracking, but there has been a lack of systematic analysis of these consequences and their underlying causes. In this work, we reviewed 172 PI research articles, highlighting that tracking and interacting with personal data can adversely affect individuals’ cognitive load, emotional well-being, social acts, and behaviors, while bringing practical challenges. By synthesizing the pathways through which these consequences occur, we recognized issues in the data-centric design ideology, variations across tracking needs and literacy, the evolving social dynamics, and individuals’ intention-behavior gap. Reflecting on the findings, we discuss how to best leverage personal data in our lives and propose a practice-oriented research agenda to mitigate these unintended consequences.

Designing for Intimate Wellbeing: Aidee, a Qualitative Approach To Urine Home Monitoring

As digital photos grow exponentially, people need new approaches to engage with their photos over time. We describe our study of PhotoClock, a mobile application that leverages the temporal metadata embedded in digital photos to encourage contemplation of memories bound up in one's photo archive. PhotoClock uses the clock-time of the present moment to re-present one's photos taken around that same time of the day in the past. As time ticks away relentlessly, PhotoClock highlights the ephemeral and ongoing quality of time. We conducted the field study with 12 participants over 8 weeks. Our goals are: (i) to investigate the reflective potential of clock-time as an alternative design approach for supporting memory-oriented photo interaction, and (ii) to explore conceptual propositions related to slowness and temporality. Findings revealed that PhotoClock generated diverse and reflective experiences on participants’ life stories. We conclude with implications and opportunities for future HCI and design research.

PhotoClock: Reliving Memories in Digital Photos as the Clock Ticks in the Present Moment

Self-tracking technology can help users develop new knowledge about themselves, supporting their health and general wellbeing. Most of these devices inform users about their lives by autonomously generating data about highly constrained topics. Recent research has started to explore more flexible, manual self-tracking systems, which allow users to express themselves through their data and learn by engaging with their experiences in-the-moment. This paper describes a field trial using the Chromatize app, designed to explore the value of minimalism and flexibility – including in data histories – in personal tracking systems. Our data indicates that low-burden experience logging systems which focus on the creation of symbolically-rich, self-defined data can support self-awareness, reflection and regulation at opportune moments. The analysis also contributes a formulation of reflection in the context of self-tracking technologies that is more meaningful than the loose use of ‘reflection’ used in much of the literature.

Encountering Cover Versions of Songs Derived from Personal Music-Listening History Data: a Design and Field Trial of Musée in Homes

Although archiving daily moods in a diary is a common behavior, reflection is difficult because of the pressure brought about by continuous self-tracking of personal moods. In this paper, we developed Lumino, a standalone device that enables users to log their daily moods with colored lights and switch mode to show the log by physically sliding a circular lighting plate. The results of our three-week in-field study with six participants revealed that Lumino helped users encounter emotional archives as it separated reflective experiences from daily life activities. Moreover, Lumino helped prevent deep reflection on negative emotions and maintained privacy through abstract color expression. We also found user's various trials to control emotion reflections in their own usage patterns. We propose considerations for augmenting daily mood recording experiences combined with existing diary practices and further implications for designing how to support positively the negative reflections in everyday spaces.
