Intra-operative augmented reality in distal locking
Roberto Londei,Marco Esposito,Benoit Diotte,Simon Weidert,Ekkehard Euler,Peter-Helmut Thaller,Nassir Navab,Pascal Fallavollita +7 more
- 27 Mar 2015
TL;DR: The design of an augmented reality solution that assists surgeons during the distal locking of intramedullary nailing procedures confirmed that intra-operative navigation using augmented reality provides an alternative way to performdistal locking in a safe and timely manner.

Multi-Modal Intra-Operative Navigation During Distal Locking of Intramedullary Nails
Benoit Diotte,Pascal Fallavollita,Lejing Wang,Simon Weidert,Ekkehard Euler,Peter H. Thaller,Nassir Navab +6 more
TL;DR: An augmented radiolucent drill is proposed to assist surgeons in completing the distal locking procedure without any additional X-ray acquisitions and the surgeons will be able to maintain the down the beam positioning required to drill the screws into the nail holes successfully.

Radiation-Free drill guidance in interlocking of intramedullary nails
Benoit Diotte,Pascal Fallavollita,Lejing Wang,Simon Weidert,Peter-Helmut Thaller,Ekkehard Euler,Nassir Navab +6 more
- 01 Oct 2012
TL;DR: A novel low cost radiation-free drilling guide is designed to assist surgeons in completing the distal locking procedure without any x-ray acquisitions by exploiting solely the optical images to detect the drilling guide in order to estimate the tip position in real-time in x-rays.
Relevance-Based Visualization to Improve Surgeon Perception
Olivier Pauly,Benoit Diotte,Séverine Habert,Simon Weidert,Ekkehard Euler,Pascal Fallavollita,Nassir Navab +6 more
- 28 Jun 2014
TL;DR: This paper presents a learning-based labeling of the surgical scene using a depth camera (comprised of RGB and depth range sensors) that provides surgeons a dissected surgical scene, enhanced visualization, and upgraded depth perception.

The 'Augmented' Circles: A Video-Guided Solution for the Down-the-Beam Positioning of IM Nail Holes
Roberto Londei,Marco Esposito,Benoit Diotte,Simon Weidert,Ekkehard Euler,Peter-Helmut Thaller,Nassir Navab,Pascal Fallavollita +7 more
- 28 Jun 2014
TL;DR: An augmented reality application that visually depicts to the surgeon two ‘augmented’ circles, their centers lying on the axis of the nail hole, making it visible in space, is proposed, demonstrating that in over 95% of the trials, the nail Hole appeared as a circle using an initial X-ray image.
