Developments and research directions in pipe jacking and microtunneling

The invention provides a traversing reverse circulating drilling method of a horizontal directional drilling pipeline and a special drilling bit, which are suitable for laying oil-gas pipelines and municipal pipelines. The drilling method comprises the following steps of: mounting a gravel pump at the outer end of a drilling machine or a pit, wherein hollow cavities are formed in the drilling bit and the drilling stem in use; arranging a slag suction port communicated with a borehole circular space on a reaming drilling bit; sleeving a roller cone seat with a roller cone outside the body of the reaming drilling bit, wherein the position of the roller cone corresponds to that of the slag suction port; arranging a plug for blockage at one end of the reaming drilling bit; and circularly flowing slurry according to a flowing direction from a slurry pond to the borehole circular space, the reaming drilling bit, the drilling stem, the gravel pump and the slurry pond during drilling so as to reach the aim of deslagging. The method and the drilling bit of the invention can be adopted to effectively remove drilling slag and gravel in the horizontal borehole and solve various problems in the traversing construction of the large-diameter horizontal directional drilling pipeline.

Complex Soil–Pipe Interaction: Challenges in Geological Characterization and Construction

Limited available land is leading to the emerging demand for trenchless methods for the installation of buried pipelines. Pipe jacking is one such method. The prediction of jacking forces is crucial in assessing the performance of the pipe jacking process, thus many efforts have been made to predict the jacking forces. Current approaches are based on the negotiated geological conditions, either through empirical or mechanistic approaches. However, such methods are only useful during the planning and design stages. During the construction stage, the microtunnel boring machine (mTBM) operators base their decisions on the operation parameters. This is further complicated when pipe jacking is performed through highly weathered lithology, i.e. ‘soft rocks’. There continues to be a gap in this domain of modelling jacking forces for soft rocks based on operation parameters. In the current study, deep learning techniques were applied to pipe jacking field-measured operation parameters obtained from the Kuching Wastewater Management System. The deep learning models helped to relate the time series input operation parameters to the jacking forces. Subsequently, a study on different moving average periods towards the input features was applied to understand the changes in the prediction performance of the jacking forces using the deep learning model. From the study, the results showed that the cumulative parameters which are the drive length, the cumulative days elapsed, and the cumulative lubricant used have the highest moving average periods. This suggested that along the pipe jacking process, these features would have a significant impact on the jacking forces.

With the continuous development of the nationwide urbanization, the urbanization utility construction becomes more and more development and perfection, especially the trenchless technology has been applied to the urbanization utilities construction and also brought great changes of this construction fields. The authors discussed the problems based on a city's storm water - sewage separation trial section project using Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD). As well, this paper put forward the sewer pipelines construction quality control methods according to the requirement of sewer pipes.
