We present a link layer protocol called the multi-radio unification protocol or MUP. On a single node, MUP coordinates the operation of multiple wireless network cards tuned to non-overlapping frequency channels. The goal of MUP is to optimize local spectrum usage via intelligent channel selection in a multihop wireless network. MUP works with standard-compliant IEEE 802.11 hardware, does not require changes to applications or higher-level protocols, and can be deployed incrementally. The primary usage scenario for MUP is a multihop community wireless mesh network, where cost of the radios and battery consumption are not limiting factors. We describe the design and implementation of MUP, and analyze its performance using both simulations and measurements based on our implementation. Our results show that under dynamic traffic patterns with realistic topologies, MUP significantly improves both TCP throughput and user perceived latency for realistic workloads.

Survey paper: A survey on routing algorithms for wireless Ad-Hoc and mesh networks

This paper presents the architecture and protocols of SMesh, a completely transparent wireless mesh system that offers seamless, fast handoff, supporting VoIP and other real-time application traffic for any unmodified 802.11 device. In SMesh, the entire mesh network is seen by the mobile clients as a single, omnipresent access point.Fast handoff is achieved by ensuring that each client is served by at least one access point at any time. Mobile clients are handled by a single access point during stable connectivity times. During handoff transitions, SMesh uses more than one access point to handle the moving client. Access points continuously monitor the connectivity quality of any client in their range and efficiently share this information with other access points in the vicinity of that client to coordinate which of them should serve the client.Experimental results on a fully deployed mesh network consisting of 14 access points demonstrate the effectiveness of the SMesh architecture and its handoff protocol.

The Kansei testbed at the Ohio State University is designed to facilitate research on networked sensing applications at scale. Kansei embodies a unique combination of characteristics as a result of its design focus on sensing and scaling: (i) Heterogeneous hardware infrastructure with dedicated node resources for local computation, storage, data exfiltration and back-channel communication, to support complex experimentation, (ii) Time accurate hybrid simulation engine for simulating substantially larger arrays using testbed hardware resources, (iii) High fidelity sensor data generation and real-time data and event injection, (iv) Software components and associated job control language to support complex multi-tier experiments utilizing real hardware resources and data generation and simulation engines. In this paper, we present the elements of Kansei testbed architecture, including its hardware and software platforms as well as its hybrid simulation and sensor data generation engines.

Kansei: a testbed for sensing at scale

Most mobile wireless networking research today relies on simulations. However, fidelity of simulation results has always been a concern, especially when the protocols being studied are affected by the propagation and interference characteristics of the radio channels. Inherent difficulty in faithfully modeling the wireless channel characteristics has encouraged several researchers to build wireless network testbeds. A full-fledged wireless testbed is spread over a large physical space because of the wide coverage area of radio signals. This makes a large-scale testbed difficult and expensive to set up, configure, and manage. This paper describes a miniaturized 802.11b-based, multi-hop wireless network testbed called MiNT. MiNT occupies a significantly small space, and dramatically reduces the efforts required in setting up a multi-hop wireless network used for wireless application/protocol testing and evaluation. MiNT is also a hybrid simulation platform that can execute ns-2 simulation scripts with the link, MAC and physical layer in the simulator replaced by real hardware. We demonstrate the fidelity of MiNT by comparing experimental results on it with similar experiments conducted on a non-miniaturized testbed. We also compare the results of experiments conducted using hybrid simulation on MiNT with those obtained using pure simulation. Finally, using a case study we show the usefulness of MiNT in wireless application testing and evaluation.

MiNT: a miniaturized network testbed for mobile wireless research

This thesis describes the Grid Roofnet, a rooftop wireless Ad Hoc network built using off the shelf computers and 802.11 hardware along with special software. The Roofnet is a real-world testbed for wireless Ad Hoc networking research, and as a side effect also provides network access to a small number of apartments in Cambridge, MA. We describe the construction and performance of the network, and draw some conclusions about the viability of such networks and directions for future research. Thesis Supervisor: Robert T.
