With the aim of meeting new technological and social requirements, nearly all companies are facing the so-called digital transformation. A starting point to respond to the changing demands is to improve the company’s ability to operate flexibly and, thus, increase its agility. Thereby, with this paper, we contribute to the ongoing discussion on changing corporate organizational structures. We used a three-stage study design to provide insights on the question of whether agility is a prerequisite or a consequence of the digital transformation. In addition to a literature analysis, we present the results of focus group interviews with managers of selected enterprises.

Organizations in Transformation: Agility as Consequence or Prerequisite of Digitization?

Requirements placed on mobile networks in terms of number and types of connected devices, data volumes and types of supported applications are increasing. 5G mobile networks, the roll-out of which is currently discussed in politics, industry and academia, are intended to meet these increasing requirements. 
Rolling out network infrastructure is not only capital-intensive, it is also associated with significant energy requirements and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions caused by producing and operating the network infrastructure. On the other hand, each generation of mobile network technologies has shown to enable additional types of applications so far. This enabling effect can have an impact on patterns of production and consumption and therefore on the related GHG emissions. For example, 5G technology is expected to be an enabler for automated driving, a use case which is expected to have substantial impacts on GHG emissions caused by transport in the long term. 
As Switzerland has ratified the Paris Agreement and aims at being climate-neutral by 2050, it is important to assess the impact of 5G mobile networks on GHG emissions in Switzerland and to identify the main factors that influence the net GHG effect of this technology. For these reasons, the present study investigates the following research questions:
(1)	How much GHG emissions will be caused by the production and operation of 5G network infrastructure in Switzerland in 2030?
(2)	What are use cases which will benefit significantly from 5G mobile networks and what is their potential to contribute to the reduction of GHG emissions in Switzerland in 2030?

Next generation mobile networks: Problem or opportunity for climate protection?

Currently, greater attention is paid to the nature of work and workplaces within the digitized industry due to the increasing complexity of work tasks. The operators are under additional stress due to the range of high dynamic processes and due to the integration of robots and autonomous operating machines. There have been few studies on how Human Factors influence the design of workplaces for Human-Robot Collaboration (HRC). Furthermore, a comprehensive, systematic and human-centered design solution for industrial workplaces particularly considering Human Factor needs within HRC is widely uncertain and a specific application with reference to production workplaces is missing.The research findings demonstrated in this paper aim to fill in the gap of designing industrial workplaces for assisting human-robot teams through a human-centered design approach in order to reduce workers’ strain during their interactions with robots and/or machines. Furthermore, the concept of an Assisting-Industrial-Workplace-System (AIWS) has been developed as a flexible hybrid cell for HRC to be integrated into a Self-Adapting-Production-Planning-System (SAPPS), which aims to enable industrial production processes to be adaptable to the constantly changing requirements of volatile markets.

Design of an Assisting Workplace Cell for Human-Robot Collaboration

This study compares illegitimate tasks and appreciation in traditional work organisations and holacracy work organisations based in Switzerland and Germany. In addition, the study tests whether the fit between employees and holacracy organisations depends on personality characteristics. Ninety-five employees working in holacratic companies participated in an online survey with standardised questionnaires on illegitimate tasks, Big Five personality dimensions, perceived holacracy satisfaction and person–organisation fit. For the comparison of illegitimate tasks and appreciation, a propensity-matching comparison group of people working in traditional companies was used. The results revealed significantly lower illegitimate tasks t(53) = −2.04, p < 0.05, with a lower level (2.49) in holacracy than in traditional work (2.78). Concerning appreciation, the results showed significantly higher values for holacratic (5.33) than for traditional work [4.14, t(53) = 4.86, p < 0.001]. Multiple linear regression of holacracy satisfaction on personality dimensions showed neuroticism (b = −4.72, p = 0.006) as a significant predictor. Agreeableness showed marginally significant results (b = 2.39, p = 0.06). This indicates that people scoring low on neuroticism and high in agreeableness may thrive better in holacracy organisations. Based on the results, theoretical and practical implications as for example implications for corporates hiring strategy, are discussed. Finally, this study presents numerous directions for future research.
