Non-suicidal reasons for self-harm: A systematic review of self-reported accounts.

Self-injury in female versus male psychiatric patients: A comparison of characteristics, psychopathology and aggression regulation

Rates of hospital presentation for self-harm have increased in recent years, and although clinical practice guidelines on clinical provision prioritize positive patient experiences, the quality of provision remains variable. This systematic review provides an updated and extended synthesis of qualitative research on the following: (a) patients’ experiences of treatment following presentation to hospital; and (b) patients’ perceptions of the impact of treatment on recurrent self-harm and/or suicidal ideation, and future help-seeking. Twenty-six studies were identified for inclusion in the final synthesis. Three meta-themes emerged: (a) individuals undertake extensive identity work when presenting with self-harm, navigating the process of becoming a patient, and negotiating the type of patient they want to be; (b) care ranges from gentle to hostile, with care at admission and discharge being particularly disorientating; and (c) negative experiences of clinical treatment may increase future self-harm. Emerging research gaps include the need for further theoretically informed qualitative research in this area.

Patients' Experiences of Emergency Hospital Care Following Self-Harm: Systematic Review and Thematic Synthesis of Qualitative Research.

This paper describes the development of a community mental health project in a local football stadium. Funded for three years by the Laureus Foundation's 'Sport for Good' initiative, the project provides mental health promotion and mental health awareness input targeted initially at young men, a group who are often very difficult to engage in this type work. Using group interventions and utilising football as a metaphor, the project helps young men address issues around depression, self-esteem and inclusion, and addresses the subject of suicide which remains the second biggest cause of death in young men in Britain. The paper describes the development of the project, the structure of the groups and the evaluation of the first two groups to complete the process. The work takes place in the Moss Rose stadium, home of Macclesfield Town, a team in the English Football League.

It's a goal!: basing a community psychiatric nursing service in a local football stadium.

In recent years there has been a growing interest in the use of football as a vehicle for mental health interventions. This paper outlines some of the ways that mental health service providers have begun to develop strategies with football clubs, the Football Association and government departments that involve playing or watching football and placing mental health services in football clubs. The paper also looks at how some attempts are being made at regional and national levels to develop and bring together services that use football as a vehicle for mental health service delivery.

The growing role of football as a vehicle for interventions in mental health care

Self-harm has become one of the great taboos of our time. In men it is even less acknowledged, accepted and understood than it is in women. This report looks at the almost invisible population of men who self-harm. Using interviews with men who self-harm, it explores their experiences and their perspectives on the support and services to which they have access. It draws on these perspectives to identify what professionals, service providers and commissioners can learn from men who self-harm and proposes ways forward to better meet their needs.
