Holistic care is the primary focus of today's health care system. Nurses are encouraged to maintain good relationships with their patients and to be sensitive to patient autonomy. Furthermore, patients are increasingly demanding and enjoying the right to join in decision-making processes concerning their treatment plans. The importance of patient autonomy is emphasized in the nursing literature on ethics, but no articles focus on the specific situation in Taiwan. The authors review definitions of and concepts tied to autonomy in the literature, redefine the concept to incorporate additional attributes, and construct example cases. Finally, they list empirical references on the application of the concept and the development of appropriate measures.

This study aims to investigate the effects of work-life balance, work environment, and reward and compensation on employee retention in Malaysia. A total of 400 questionnaires were collected online from employees within the service industry in Malaysia. Partial least square structure equation modeling was used to test the model and hypotheses. The results reveal that work-life balance and work environment had a strong positive effect on employee retention, but reward and compensation had a much stronger positive effect on employee retention. This research provides unique theoretical contributions by investigating these factors in the midst of the COVID-19 outbreak as components of the reciprocal process between employee and employer, and their effects on employee retention. This study also provides vital insights to business organizations to consider designing effective employee retention plans for a successful business.

Employee Retention in the Service Industry in Malaysia

ABSTRACT Working overtime is one of the risk factors for turnover intention; however, little is known about its mediating and moderating mechanisms, especially among social workers. This study adds to the knowledge through investigating the mediating role of burnout and the moderating role of person-organization value congruence. A sample of 5,930 Chinese social workers (Mean age = 30.4 years old, SD = 7.9) is obtained from the China Social Work Longitudinal Study (CSWLS) 2019. Results illustrate that burnout mediates the relationship between working overtime and turnover intention. Additionally, the direct effect of working overtime on turnover intention is moderated by person-organization value congruence, with the effect being weaker for social workers with high person-organization value congruence than for those with low person-organization value congruence. These findings provide new insights for explaining how working overtime influences turnover intention. Implications for policy and practice are also discussed.
