A multi-band anisotropic metamaterial absorber operating in the terahertz (THz) range is constructed using a graphene-based split square ring resonator array featuring two gaps and a connecting bar. The design is meticulously simulated through the finite element method (FEM) using CST Software. Subsequently, an equivalent circuit model (ECM) is introduced, leveraging impedance and transmission lines, and implemented with a rapid MATLAB code to evaluate the absorber's behavior in the THz spectrum. The proposed absorber, dynamically adjustable through a one-layered resonator array, exhibits a strong linear dichroism response of 99% within a frequency range of 0.3-4 THz. The metamaterial has an absorption rate of 81% for one absorption band in transverse magnetic mode and its three absorption bands in transverse electric mode have an average of 99.3% in each absorption band with absorption over 99%. This absorber holds potential applications in polarization-sensitive devices and THz systems. The ECM model was established to provide an efficient analytical tool for assessing the absorber's performance, and the FEM simulation results align well with those derived from the ECM.

Abstract This review serves as a comprehensive design strategy for designing quasi-zero stiffness (QZS) mechanical metamaterials (MMs). It discusses their underlying deformation mechanisms that enable the attainment of QZS behavior under both compressive and tensile loadings. While the QZS characteristic of metamaterials has garnered considerable attention, further research is essential to unlock their potential fully. Numerous QZS metamaterials have been meticulously reviewed. They comprise various elements and mechanisms, including positive and negative stiffness elements (PS and NS), PS elements with variable stiffness, bending mechanisms employing stiff joints/areas, buckling, buckling-rotating, and bending/buckling deformation mechanisms leading to a QZS feature. Furthermore, the capability of multi-material, adaptive, smart metamaterials, origami (bending around the hinge of the folded joints), and kirigami lattices (out-of-plane buckling via cutting patterns) are weighted. These diverse mechanisms contribute to achieving QZS behavior in metamaterials under both compression and tension loads, which is paramount for various mechanical applications such as passive vibration isolation. This review effectively categorizes QZS metamaterials based on their underlying mechanisms, providing scholars with valuable insights to identify suitable mechanisms for the desired QZS feature. 

Mastering the art of designing mechanical metamaterials with quasi-zero stiffness for passive vibration isolation: A review

Vibration and acoustic energies are widely harvested for the power requirements of wireless sensor nodes (WSNs) but rarely we can see the simultaneous conversion of vibration and acoustic using a single energy harvester. To attain the self-sustained long-standing operation of WSNs, we present a novel hybrid vibro-acoustic energy harvester (HVA-EH) utilizing a spherical magnet to harvest acoustic and vibration energies at the same time. The development, characterization, and power management of the proposed HVA-EH are illustrated in this paper. The Prototype comprises of 3D printed structure, a cantilever beam with a cavity for the spherical magnet which is used to add more resonance to the system, a Helmholtz cavity (HC) and a flexible micro planar coil (FMPC). Due to base excitation, the cantilever beam vibrates and as a result, the magnet oscillates, while on the other side the acoustic waves enter the HC through its neck and oscillate the FMPC. Because of these oscillations, the FMPC experiences variation in magnetic flux and an electromotive force is generated. The device was tested under standalone vibration and acoustic environment as well as under a hybrid environment and the output parameters were noted. It was observed that when the device was exposed to a hybrid environment, the results showed enhanced output parameters and generates higher energy. By adding vibration to the standalone acoustic device, an increase of 44.72% was observed in the output power. The developed prototype was also connected to a power management circuit developed in this work, and an output DC power of 5056 μW was achieved. Additionally, a 1.5 V AAA battery was successfully charged by the HVA-EH in an hour’s time duration. The output power produced by the novel HVA-EH is signiﬁcant and is quite enough to operate the WSNs. This work paves a new way for developing hybrid environment-type energy harvesters for efficiency enhancement. 

Development, characterization, and power management of electromagnetic-type hybrid vibro-acoustic energy harvester for wireless sensor nodes

This paper presents a conductive component tailored to a flexible substrate using Al-doped CoxCa(0.90−x)Ni0.10Fe2O4 (x = 0.25, 0.50, and 0.75) for visible to near-infrared (NIR) spectra in magneto-optical applications. The developed nanoparticles show uniformity, nanosized grains, and capillary nanopore fusion characteristics, which are confirmed by x-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy analyses, respectively. The XRD analysis revealed crystallite sizes of 33.36, 37.08, and 44.25 nm and particle sizes of 45.6, 34.6, and 31.5 nm for the compositions x = 0.25, 0.50, and 0.75, respectively. The Al-doped nanoparticles are converted to a flexible solid substrate utilizing a polyvinyl alcohol matrix, facilitating conformality to build complex shapes and broadening their application scope. The structure shows higher absorption across 450–720 nm, 480–720 nm, and 200–850 nm spectra for x = 0.25, 0.50, and 0.75, respectively. The distinctive magnetic and electrical properties are also evaluated through magnetic force microscopy and conductive atomic force microscopy, culminating in a substrate with exceptional control over light–matter interactions with smooth surfaces with lower surface roughness. The vibrating sample magnetometer analysis of the substrate shows how varying cobalt content affects magnetic properties relevant for visible to near-infrared (NIR) applications, offering insights into coercivity, magnetization, and retentivity changes at different x values. The perceptible novelties of this work are advancements in material sciences aimed at enhancing light manipulation and flexibility for electronic devices.

This paper is about sustainable Electromagnetic Metamaterials (EM-MM), which are a new class of artificial materials with unique electromagnetic properties that cannot be found in nature. These materials are made from discrete micro and nanoscale objects which resonate, allowing for precise control over how they interact with electromagnetic waves, and hence, leading to unheard of functionalities. Thus the need for sustainable synthesis methods for EM-MM has become paramount to mitigate the quantity of resources associated with conventional fabrication techniques. Renewable resources like biopolymers that mimic natural patterns are examples of the sustainable use of bio based synthetic material pathways. This may guarantee sustainability through fabricating additive manufacturing strategies, especially 3D printing innovation where fabric statement is controlled only as required, diminishing waste. With all this recycling and up cycling offer opportunities for development and cost reduction while reducing the natural impacts related to sustainability. There are several different domains have benefited from the application of EM MM, for example solar energy harvesting offer potential for sustainable power generation, imaging uses met material lenses which have superior resolution and sensitivity, while in telecommunications met material antennas ensure to transmit and get signals more successfully. But there are still a few issues that still need to be resolved in electromagnetic met materials. Future directions include the research of incorporating a plan of new types of electromagnetic composites with upgraded qualities and sustainable synthesis strategies. Applications of technology require to overcome practical challenges such as integration, toughness, and cost-effectiveness while assessing societal implications, financial, and social affects. For the sustainable advancement of metamaterials in order to deal with major societal concerns, minimizing their natural impressions requires collaboration and moral concerns. 

Sustainability in Electromagnetic Metamaterials: Synthesis, Applications, and Future Directions with Challenges

With the development of Internet of things (IoT), there have a large amount of interconnected devices communicates with each other through electromagnetic (EM) waves sent by Wi-Fi router. It is promising to harvest Wi-Fi energy realizing wireless power transmission for sensors or microelectronic devices. However, the energy is hardly to be harvested effectively due to the complexity and disorder of EM waves. To address such issue, we propose an EM metamaterial based on parametric equation as dual-band Wi-Fi energy harvester operating at 2.45 GHz and 5.8 GHz. By adjusting these equation parameters, the prototype can achieve almost an arbitrary shape, avoiding the problem of local optimal solutions. Through the co-simulation of MATLAB and CST Studio Suite software, we design a genetic algorithm (GA) to optimize the proposed structure so that it can harvest energy at Wi-Fi frequency bands. The optimized metamaterial exhibits electric dipole resonance and magnetic dipole resonance simultaneously at 2.45 GHz and 5.8 GHz, and the maximum harvesting efficiency is 96.9% and 95% at normal incidence, respectively. In particular, the metamaterial has the characteristics of polarization insensitive, ultra-wide band and wide-angle harvesting. It is expected to integrate with small electronic devices to realize the function of remote energy conversion, self-powered, and maintenance-free in the era of advanced wireless networks.

Self-powered biomedical devices, which are the new vision of Internet Of Things (IOT) healthcare, are facing many technical and application challenges. Many research works have reported biomedical devices and self-powered applications for healthcare, along with various strategies to improve the monitoring time of self-powered devices or to eliminate the dependence on electrochemical batteries. However, none of these works have especially assessed the development and application of healthcare devices in an African context. This article provides a comprehensive review of self-powered devices in the biomedical research field, introduces their applications for healthcare, evaluates their status in Africa by providing a thorough review of existing biomedical device initiatives and available financial and scientific cooperation institutions in Africa for the biomedical research field, and highlights general challenges for implementing self-powered biomedical devices and particular challenges related to developing countries. The future perspectives of the aforementioned research field are provided, as well as an architecture for improving this research field in developing countries.
