Pain is one of the universal medical problems in health institutions. In fact it can directly affect patients' comfort and lifestyle, causing nausea, vomiting, fatigue, stress, lack of control, poor quality of life, and a lack of sexual activity and public relations, also it can lead to poor work performance and daily activities. The aim of the study is to investigate the effect of nursing educational program about postoperative pain management for postoperative patients. A quasiexperimental design has been applied on (50) nurse to evaluate the effectiveness of an educational program on nurse’s knowledge about management of patients with postoperative pain in AL-Najaf AL-Ashraf city at Al-Sadder medical city through the period October 1, 2018 to, August 18, 2019. The results of the study show there is a high significant effect of the educational program regarding nurses’ knowledge toward postoperative pain management. The study concluded that the majority of nurses in surgical ward had knowledge deficit concerning management of patient with postoperative pain. The study recommends to encouraging nurses to enroll in sessions of special courses and conference to improve their knowledge and keep them up to date toward postoperative pain management.

Effectiveness of nursing educational program on nurses’ knowledge regarding pain management for postoperative patients

Nursing Students' Knowledge and Attitudes Regarding Pain Management

Background: Postoperative pain varies from an individual to individual. It also varies with types and extent of surgery. In general, postoperative pain is inadequately managed in most centers worldwide, especially in developing countries. Therefore, this study presents the perception and satisfaction of postoperative pain management in emergency surgeries. Methods: A 1-year prospective study of the 891 patients who underwent emergency general surgeries at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, from January to December 2018 is hereby presented. Pain scores and patient's satisfaction toward postoperative pain management were considered at 8 and 24 h postoperatively through a predesigned questionnaire. Numeric Pain Rating Scale was used to determine pain intensity and the level of satisfaction following postoperative pain management. Student's t-test was used to compare the pain scores and patient's level of satisfaction of the postoperative pain management. Results: A total of 891 patients were recruited for this study, with a mean age of 36.4 ± 8.9 years with a male-to-female ratio of 1.3:1. Postoperative pain management satisfaction score for patients (98%) who had pain 8-h postoperative period was 4.8 ± 1.6. Similarly, 96.4% of the patients who had pain 24 h postoperatively scored 2.8 ± 1.7. Majority of the patients 481 (54%) were of the American Society of Anesthesiologist physical Class II. Most of the patients underwent general surgery using the technique of general anesthesia. Conclusion: This study indicated that the perception and level of patient's satisfaction regarding postoperative pain management are inadequate. The health professionals and policy makers should be aware that postoperative pain management is suboptimal, as patients still have severe postoperative pain. Therefore, the need for improved postoperative pain management.

Postoperative Pain Management in Emergency Surgeries: A One-year Survey on Perception and Satisfaction among Surgical Patients.

The influence of pain on one's quality of life, social connections, physical capacity, and mental health was significant. A nurse's or other health care professional's lack of information about pain evaluation and treatment, worries of opioid usage, abuse, and diversion, and misunderstandings about the therapeutic dose of analgesia can all contribute to inadequate pain relief. The research aims to evaluate the nurses' practice in the management of postoperative pain for adult patients after abdominal surgery. A major barrier to properly managing pain was a lack of awareness and practices of pain management. A quantitative design (descriptive study) was carried out at Al-Diwaniya Teaching Hospital for the period from 15thoctober, 2021 to 20thMay, 2022. The present study aimed to evaluate of nursesꞌ practices about management of postoperative pain for adult patients after abdominal surgery. Purposive sample comprised of (30) nurses who have been actually working in the surgical wards. Through the use of practice checklist includes (21) items concerning management of postoperative pain. The results of the study revealed that the majority of participants were have a poor level about management of postoperative pain as show with mean of score and standard division (1.58 ∓ 0.359).The study concluded that the nurses working in surgical wards have a poor level of practice about management of postoperative pain for adult patients with abdominal surgery. 

Evaluation of Nurses practices regarding postoperative pain management among Adult patient with abdominal surgery

The results showed for 60 nurses divided in two group there was highly statistically significant differences between pre and post-test for the study group (at p<0.001), while showed that there were no statistically significant differences between pre and post-test for the control group (at p>0.05). Also there were no significant statistical differences between practices toward Management of Postoperative pain for adult patients undergoing abdominal surgery with nurses' age, gender, and education level at a p-value ˃ 0.05. A quasi-experimental design study had been applied with the use of pre and post-test approaches for two groups of samples 60 nurses (study and control) to examine the effectiveness of the interventional program and nurses’ practice in the management of postoperative pain for adult patients undergoing abdominal surgery in Al-Diwaniya Teaching Hospital. The reliability of the questionnaire was achieved through a pilot study and then presented to experts to prove its validity. The total number of items included in the questionnaire was 10-items. The data was collected by using the semi-structured interview and analyzed by the application of a descriptive and inferential statistical data analysis approach.

Effectiveness of an interventional program on nurses practices regarding postoperative pain management among adult patient with abdominal surgery

Millions of surgeries performed on patients are accompanied by some degree of pain. Successful outcome of any surgery is partly dependent on pre-, intra- and post-operative pain assessment and management. Nurses are professionally responsible for pain assessment and administration of analgesia, however, poor pain control has been one of patients’ complaints traceable to poor assessment and management. This study was designed to assess nurses’ knowledge and attitude about post-operative pain assessment and management in Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital complex Ile – Ife and Ilesha units. The study was a cross – sectional descriptive survey. The instrument was a validated self administered questionnaire developed by the researchers. Ninety – five nurses from the two units were purposively selected for the study. Data analysis was done with SPSS version 16. The result showed that 53.6% of the participants had poor knowledge of post operative pain assessment and management, while 46.4% had good knowledge. Only 30.5% had positive attitude towards pain assessment and management, while 69.5% had negative attitude. In view of this result, it is recommended that nurses upgrade their knowledge through continuing education. Hospital managers should establish standards and guidelines for assessing and managing post operative pain. Keywords : Post operative pain, Assessment, Management, Nurses.
