A locking device with a solenoid release actuator includes a housing, a plunger axially slidable within the housing, a biasing member for biasing the plunger in a first direction, one or more locking balls, and the locking balls disposed in an aperture in the housing, the plunger having a portion thereof containing at least one recess for receiving the balls, a member to be locked being held in a first locked position with the plunger in a first locking position and the balls in a radially outward position, the plunger being positioned axially such that the recesses therein are not in alignment with the apertures, and a solenoid coil disposed in the housing around the plunger, for inducing a magnetic force to move the plunger against the biasing member such that the recesses align with the apertures and the balls are movable radially inward into the recesses thereby releasing the locked member. In another embodiment, a bomb, missile or torpedo having a head and tail and fins proximate the tail biased into a retracted position, incorporates such a locking device for maintaining the fins in the retracted position, and for releasing the fins upon solenoid actuation. The locking device may be tested and reset, as desired.

A system for reducing steering nibble and other vibrations in a power-assisted steering system increases the amount of damping force when a power steering boost system is applying little or no steering force to the steering actuator, and reduces the amount of damping force when the power boost system is applying significant steering force to the steering actuator. A damping member is formed of a polymer material and is urged into contact with the steering actuator by a spring-biased clamping member. A shuttle valve regulates pressure from the hydraulic steering boost system to overcome the spring biasing force whenever hydraulic pressure is applied to the steering actuator. The preload of the spring biasing mechanism is varied by an electronic control unit that receives inputs from a driver-activated switch, and from vehicle condition sensors to allow automatic, adaptive adjustment of the damping to optimize driving comfort and safety.

The inventive parking brake is further characterized in that the locking device (40) is mechanically actuated by the blocking device when the blocking position is released and is maintained in the locking position by the electromagnet (30) that is supplied with current.

A locking hydraulic actuator has a cylinder and a main piston that is movable from an extend position to a retract position by a hydraulic circuit. The actuator has a locking mechanism that includes a lock piston that slides within a lock piston bore of the main piston. One or more lock segments are held by slots within the main piston and may be radially constrained within a tailstock housing and cylinder. The lock segments maintain the main piston in a locked position. The lock segments have two straight tapers, one on a proximal face and the other on a distal face, which transmit axial loading forces to and from the cylinder and main piston by distributed loading, thereby avoiding point-contact loading and material deformation. The lock piston, lock segments, piston, and cylinder may have different hardnesses.

The invention relates to an actuator device (1) for actuating a locking mechanism, in particular for actuating a parking break device of a drive train of a motor vehicle, which is embodied with an automatic gearbox. The actuator device comprises a piston unit (4), a locking device and an electromagnetic actuating device (6) which is used to actuate a release element (7) which deactivates the locking device (5). An emergency release mechanism (14) is actively connected to the piston unit (4) enabling the piston unit (4) to be placed in an axial position which is equivalent to the open state of the locking mechanism. According to the invention, the locking device (5), the piston unit (4) and the release element (7) cooperate with each other in such a manner that when the locking mechanism is open and when the electromagnetic actuating device (6) is not fed with electric energy and when the locking mechanism is closed and when a fluid pressure is applied to the piston unit (4), an active force component, which is smaller than the releasing force of the locking mechanism, engages with the piston unit (4) in the opening direction of the locking mechanism and the locking mechanism remains in the current controlled state. The emergency release mechanism (15) enables the locking device (5) to be deactivated.

The locking device comprises resilient repulsion means (58) which react between a fixed body (16) and one or more rolling members (42) and which tend to urge these members in the direction of wedging between two wedging surfaces (34, 36) associated with the body (16) and with the rod (12) of the actuator (10), respectively. A control piston (48) is arranged so as to engage the rolling members (42) in order to urge them in the release direction under the effect of a thrust exerted on the piston in the opposite direction to the force exerted by the resilient means (54).
