Recent startling interest for lanthanide luminescence is stimulated by the continuously expanding need for luminescent materials meeting the stringent requirements of telecommunication, lighting, electroluminescent devices, (bio-)analytical sensors and bio-imaging set-ups. This critical review describes the latest developments in (i) the sensitization of near-infrared luminescence, (ii) “soft” luminescent materials (liquid crystals, ionic liquids, ionogels), (iii) electroluminescent materials for organic light emitting diodes, with emphasis on white light generation, and (iv) applications in luminescent bio-sensing and bio-imaging based on time-resolved detection and multiphoton excitation (500 references).

Interpretation of europium(III) spectra

Ferrimagnetic inorganic nanorods have been used as building blocks to construct liquid crystals with optical properties that can be instantly and reversibly controlled by manipulating the nanorod orientation using considerably weak external magnetic fields (1 mT). Under an alternating magnetic field, they exhibit an optical switching frequency above 100 Hz, which is comparable to the performance of commercial liquid crystals based on electrical switching. By combining magnetic alignment and lithography processes, it is also possible to create patterns of different polarizations in a thin composite film and control over the transmittance of light in particular areas. Developing such magnetically responsive liquid crystals opens the door toward various applications, which may benefit from the instantaneous and contactless nature of magnetic manipulation.

Magnetically actuated liquid crystals.

[C12mim]3[DyBr6] (C12mim = 1-dodecyl-3-methylimidazolium) represents a new material with interesting luminescent behavior as well as mesomorphic and magnetic properties. The compound was found to show thermotropic liquid crystalline behavior and forms smectic mesophases which were investigated by hot-stage polarizing optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. The emission color of [C12mim]3[DyBr6] can be tuned from white to orange-yellow by the choice of the excitation wavelength. Sample excitation with λex = 366 nm leads to the blue-whitish luminescence from the imidazolium cation itself. With λex = 254 nm the common Dy(III) emission is observed which mainly arises from the 4F9/2 → 6H13/2 transition and, in consequence, the sample appears orange. Magnetic measurements show for Dy(III) in [C12mim]3[DyBr6] an effective magnetic moment of μeff = 9.6 μB at room temperature. Dysprosium-Based Ionic Liquid Crystals: Thermal, Structural, Photo- and Magnetophysical Properties

An anisotropic and inhomogeneous magnetic interaction (the average spin−spin interaction constant J  > 0) was observed in the various liquid crystalline (LC) phases of racemic and nonracemic all-organic radical LC compounds 1a and 1b. We discussed how the LC superstructures induced the magnetic interaction to operate in the LC phases in terms of spin−spin dipole and exchange interactions by means of VT-EPR spectroscopy. The magnitude of the magnetic interaction depended on the type of LC phase, or the superstructure. Furthermore, these radical LC droplets floating on water were commonly attracted to a permanent magnet and moved freely under the influence of this magnet, whereas the crystallized particles of the same compounds never responded to the magnet. The response of the LC droplets to the magnet also varied depending on the type of LC phase, that is, the extent of the magnetic interaction.

Anisotropic and inhomogeneous magnetic interactions observed in all-organic nitroxide radical liquid crystals.

The liquid-crystalline rare-earth complexes of the type [Ln(LH)3(DOS)3]where Ln is Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, or Yb; LH is the Schiff base N-octadecyl-4-tetradecyloxysalicylaldimine; and DOS is dodecylsulfateexhibit a smectic A phase. Because of the presence of rare-earth ions with a large magnetic anisotropy, the smectic A phase of these liquid crystals can be easier aligned in an external magnetic field than smectic A phases of conventional liquid crystals. The magnetic anisotropy of the [Ln(LH)3(DOS)3] complexes was determined by measurement of the temperature-dependence of the magnetic susceptibility using a Faraday balance. The highest value for the magnetic anisotropy was found for the dysprosium(III) complex. The magnetic alignment of these liquid crystals was studied by time-resolved synchrotron small-angle X-ray scattering experiments.
