A system to generate and interpret customized visual languages in given application areas is presented. The generation is highly automated. The user presents a set of sample visual sentences to the generator. The generator uses inference grammar techniques to produce a grammar that generalizes the initial set of sample sentences, and exploits general semantic information about the application area to determine the meaning of the visual sentences in the inferred language. The interpreter is modeled on an attribute grammar. A knowledge base, constructed during the generation of the system, is then consulted to construct the meaning of the visual sentence. The architecture of the system and its use in the application environment of visual text editing (inspired by the Heidelberg icon set) enhanced with file management features are reported. >

The inference of tree languages from finite samples: an algebraic approach

This book explains advanced theoretical and application-related issues in grammatical inference, a research area inside the inductive inference paradigm for machine learning. The first three chapters of the book deal with issues regarding theoretical learning frameworks; the next four chapters focus on the main classes of formal languages according to Chomsky's hierarchy, in particular regular and context-free languages; and the final chapter addresses the processing of biosequences. The topics chosen are of foundational interest with relatively mature and established results, algorithms and conclusions. The book will be of value to researchers and graduate students in areas such as theoretical computer science, machine learning, computational linguistics, bioinformatics, and cognitive psychology who are engaged with the study of learning, especially of the structure underlying the concept to be learned. Some knowledge of mathematics and theoretical computer science, including formal language theory, automata theory, formal grammars, and algorithmics, is a prerequisite for reading this book.

A k-Testable tree set in the Strict sense (k-TS) is essentially defined by a finite set of patterns of "size" k that are permitted to appear in the trees of the tree language. Given a positive sample S of trees over a ranked alphabet, an algorithm is proposed which obtains the smallest k-TS tree set containing S. The proposed algorithm is polynomial on the size of S and identifies the class of k-TS tree languages in the limit from positive data.

Learning k-Testable tree sets from positive data*

In 1967 E. M. Gold published a paper in which the language classes from the Chomsky-hierarchy were analyzed in terms of learnability, in the technical sense of identification in the limit. His results were mostly negative, and perhaps because of this his work had little impact on linguistics.
In the early eighties there was renewed interest in the paradigm, mainly because of work by Angluin and Wright. Around the same time, Arikawa and his co-workers refined the paradigm by applying it to so-called Elementary Formal Systems. By making use of this approach Takeshi Shinohara was able to come up with an impressive result; any class of context-sensitive grammars with a bound on its number of rules is learnable.
Some linguistically motivated work on learnability also appeared from this point on, most notably Wexler & Culicover 1980 and Kanazawa 1994. The latter investigates the learnability of various classes of categorial grammar, inspired by work by Buszkowski and Penn, and raises some interesting questions.
We follow up on this work by exploring complexity issues relevant to learning these classes, answering an open question from Kanazawa 1994, and applying the same kind of approach to obtain (non)learnable classes of Combinatory Categorial Grammars, Tree Adjoining Grammars, Minimalist grammars, Generalized Quantifiers, and some variants of Lambek Grammars. We also discuss work on learning tree languages and its application to learning Dependency Grammars.
Our main conclusions are:
- formal learning theory is relevant to linguistics,
- identification in the limit is feasible for non-trivial classes, 
- the `Shinohara approach' -i.e., placing a numerical bound on the complexity of a grammar- can lead to a learnable class, but this completely depends on the specific nature of the formalism and the notion of complexity. We give examples of natural classes of commonly used linguistic formalisms that resist this kind of approach,
- learning is hard work. Our results indicate that learning even `simple' classes of languages requires a lot of computational effort,
- dealing with structure (derivation-, dependency-) languages instead of string languages offers a useful and promising approach to learnabilty in a linguistic context

Learning categorial grammars

Tree automata generalize the notion of a finite automaton working on strings to that of a finite automaton operating on trees. Most results for finite automata have been extended to tree automata. In this paper we introduce tree derivatives which extend the concept of Brzozowski's string derivatives. We use tree derivatives for minimizing and characterizing tree automata. Tree derivatives are used as a basis of inference of tree automata from finite samples of trees. Our method compares tree derivative sets and infers a tree automaton based on the amount of overlap between the derivative sets. Several of the limitations present in the tree inference techniques by Brayer and Fu and Edwards, Gonzalez, and Thomason are not imposed by our algorithm.
