Gene therapy of experimental brain tumors using neural progenitor cells
Sara Benedetti,Barbara Pirola,Bianca Pollo,Lorenzo Magrassi,Maria Grazia Bruzzone,Dorotea Rigamonti,Rossella Galli,Silvia Selleri,Francesco Di Meco,Claudio De Fraja,Angelo L. Vescovi,Elena Cattaneo,Gaetano Finocchiaro +12 more
TL;DR: Retrovirus-mediated transfer of the gene for interleukin-4 is an effective treatment for rat brain glioblastomas and a new approach for gene therapy of brain tumors, based on the grafting of neural stem cells producing therapeutic molecules is supported.

Eradication of Rat Malignant Gliomas by Retroviral-mediated, in Vivo Delivery of the Interleukin 4 Gene
Sara Benedetti,Maria Grazia Bruzzone,Bianca Pollo,Francesco DiMeco,Lorenzo Magrassi,Barbara Pirola,N. Cirenei,Mario P. Colombo,Gaetano Finocchiaro +8 more
TL;DR: Findings suggest that IL-4 gene transfer is a new, promising approach for treating malignant gliomas and cured rats developed an immunological memory because they rejected a challenge of wild-type 9L cells into the contralateral hemisphere.

Retrovirus-mediated IL-4 gene therapy in spontaneous adenocarcinomas from MMTV-neu transgenic mice.
Maria Grazia Sacco,Sara Benedetti,E Mira Cató,Mario Caniatti,Roberta Ceruti,Eugenio Scanziani,Barbara Pirola,Anna Villa,Gaetano Finocchiaro,Paolo Vezzoni +9 more
TL;DR: It is suggested that IL-4 gene transfer can significantly reduce the growth rate of spontaneously arising breast tumors and that immune-based gene therapy could efficiently complement other approaches based on different mechanisms, such as suicide gene transfer or antisense technology.

Dexamethasone inhibits the anti-tumor effect of interleukin 4 on rat experimental gliomas
Sara Benedetti,Barbara Pirola,Pietro Luigi Poliani,Laura Cajola,Bianca Pollo,R Bagnati,Lorenzo Magrassi,Patrizia Tunici,Gaetano Finocchiaro +8 more
TL;DR: Results indicate that dex significantly diminished the anti-tumor effect of IL-4, and IL- 4 gene transfer should be performed when low levels of dex are administered or in the absence of dex.
