Comparative analysis of embryonic cell lineage between Caenorhabditis briggsae and Caenorhabditis elegans
Zhongying Zhao,Thomas J. Boyle,Zhirong Bao,John I. Murray,Barbara Mericle,Robert H. Waterston +5 more
TL;DR: The extensive conservation of embryonic development between such divergent species suggests that substantial evolutionary distance between these two species has not altered these early developmental cellular events, although the developmental defects of transpecies hybrids suggest that the details of the underlying molecular pathways have diverged sufficiently so as to not be interchangeable.

Specific roles for the GATA transcription factors end-1 and end-3 during C. elegans E-lineage development.
TL;DR: The results indicate that end-1 and end-3 have each evolved into genes with unique functions during endoderm development, thatend-3(-) embryos have a delay in the onset of E lineage cell fate and that end.1 has only a partially penetrant ability to activate E lineage fate.

Analysis of Cell Fate from Single-Cell Gene Expression Profiles in C. elegans
Xiao Liu,Fuhui Long,Hanchuan Peng,Sarah J. Aerni,Min Jiang,Adolfo Sánchez-Blanco,John I. Murray,Elicia Preston,Barbara Mericle,Serafim Batzoglou,Eugene W. Myers,Stuart K. Kim +11 more
TL;DR: An automatic cell lineage analyzer that converts high-resolution images of worms into a data table showing fluorescence expression with single-cell resolution is developed and expression profiles of 93 genes in 363 specific cells from L1 stage larvae are generated.
Multidimensional regulation of gene expression in the C. elegans embryo
John I. Murray,Thomas J. Boyle,Elicia Preston,Elicia Preston,D. Vafeados,Barbara Mericle,Peter Weisdepp,Zhongying Zhao,Zhirong Bao,Zhirong Bao,Max E. Boeck,Robert H. Waterston +11 more
TL;DR: This work quantitatively measured reporter expression of 127 genes, primarily transcription factors, in every cell and with high temporal resolution in C. elegans embryos, providing the first large-scale, digitally based, cellular resolution compendium of gene expression dynamics in live animals.
Automated analysis of embryonic gene expression with cellular resolution in C. elegans.
John I. Murray,Zhirong Bao,Zhirong Bao,Thomas J. Boyle,Max E. Boeck,Barbara Mericle,Thomas J. Nicholas,Zhongying Zhao,Matthew J. Sandel,Robert H. Waterston +9 more
TL;DR: A system that permits the automated analysis of reporter gene expression in Caenorhabditis elegans with cellular resolution continuously during embryogenesis is described and its utility is demonstrated by defining the expression patterns of reporters for several embryonically expressed transcription factors.
