Information access issues for interdisciplinary scholars: Results of a Delphi study on women's studies research

LARGE UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES FACE particular challenges in selecting information resources, organizing them, and providing direct services to support interdisciplinary scholarship. The tension between generalization and specialization is manifested in these core activities and in the debate over branch versus centralized libraries. External factors affecting library strategies include the organization of interdisciplinary research and teaching, institutional downsizing, new management theories, changes in scholarly communication, and the forthright political nature of some interdisciplinary fields. Although this article focuses on describing the challenges posed by interdisciplinarity rather than recommending solutions, examples of innovative approaches are noted.

Meeting the Information Needs of Interdisciplinary Scholars: Issues for Administrators of Large University Libraries.

The ACRL Women’s Studies Section Technical Services Committee investigated the assignment of subject headings to core works in women’s studies. Annotations for the works were compared with subject headings on OCLC cataloging copy, mainly created by the Library of Congress. Inadequacies were identified and traced to three sources: inadequacy of terminology, the complexities of assigning headings in interdisciplinary and/or emerging fields, and standard cataloging practices. Recommendations for amelioration of these problems are made.

An Empirical Examination of Subject Headings for Women’s Studies Core Materials

In the last decade, online databases in the field of women and gender studies have matured. There are now a variety of bibliographic and full text databases available, both free on the Internet and through fee-based subscriptions. This article provides an in-depth analysis of three major fee-based databases: Women’s Studies International, Contemporary Women’s Issues, and GenderWatch. The author compares the databases by searching a core list of scholarly journals and feminist magazines to determine the coverage in each system including dates, number of citations for each periodical title, and whether full text is available for each title. The author also analyzes article coverage from those periodical titles common to all three systems for a specific year to determine which database provides the most comprehensive coverage. This analysis will provide libraries with a means to determine which of these databases will be most beneficial to their clientele, and it will encourage librarians with responsibility for selecting women’s studies online resources to advocate for more comprehensive inclusion of women’s studies journals in key databases.

A study was undertaken to compare four current awareness services: CurrentContents/OVID, Reference Update/ OVID, CARL Uncover, and FirstSearch (ContentsFirst and Articles-First). The features and performances of each are evaluated. Three factors determined to be important are ease of use, health sciences coverage, and journal currency.
