Chitosan-based nanomaterials have attracted significant attention in the biomedical field because of their unique biodegradable, biocompatible, non-toxic, and antimicrobial nature. Multiple perspectives of the proposed antibacterial effect and mode of action of chitosan-based nanomaterials are reviewed. Chitosan is presented as an ideal biomaterial for antimicrobial wound dressings that can either be fabricated alone in its native form or upgraded and incorporated with antibiotics, metallic antimicrobial particles, natural compounds and extracts in order to increase the antimicrobial effect. Since chitosan and its derivatives can enhance drug permeability across the blood-brain barrier, they can be also used as effective brain drug delivery carriers. Some of the recent chitosan formulations for brain uptake of various drugs are presented. The use of chitosan and its derivatives in other biomedical applications is also briefly discussed.

Drought is one of the worst natural disasters that affect the economic, social, and environmental status of any country. The long-term drought affects the soil ecosystem and can initiate desertification and deterioration of soil health. This leads to severe water distress, which is further aggravated by improper water management, poor irrigation practice, degradation of soil quality, and low water holding capacity of soil. Effective land management is the most feasible solution during drought. It is established that the utilization of superabsorbent hydrogel (SAH) as a soil amendment can improve soil structure, water-holding capacity, and plant available water content because of its hydrophilic three-dimensional network. However, there are contrasting observations in the existing literature related to the absorption capacity of SAH under different conditions, which may have an impact on drought management. This study purports to critically review the findings reported in the literature to reveal the influence of SAH addition for solving water stress conditions. The influence of SAH application on the physical properties of soil, such as water retention capacity, plant available water content, hydraulic conductivity, and infiltration, was investigated. This study brings out the discrepancies associated with the influence of SAH application in different textured soil, presence of salinity, and biodegradation of synthetic SAH. It was found that the application of SAH can reduce the evaporation loss and deep percolation, thereby increasing the plant growth and survival time in drought despite some reduction in swelling capacity under saline condition. The need for further studies for the development of biodegradable SAH and its performance evaluation under various environmental conditions has been summarized.

Also chitosan-based superabsorbent hydrogels have attracted great attention because of the excellent properties of chitosan such as biocompatibility, biodegradability and antibacterial properties. This review focuses on the recent progress in chitosan-based superabsorbent hydrogels, providing a brief overview of the preparation approaches, the effects of preparation conditions on the structures and water absorbency performance, chitosan-based composite hydrogels comprised of inorganic fillers, other natural polymers as well as their derivatives, and promising applications for biomedical and personal hygiene, agriculture and water treatment.

Chitosan‐based double network hydrogels with self‐healing and dual‐responsive shape memory abilities

The invention discloses high-toughness self-repairing physical hydrogel based on dual ion coordination and a preparation method thereof. The physical hydrogel has multi-crosslinking sites. The preparation method of the high-toughness self-repairing physical hydrogel comprises the following steps: dissolving N-carboxyethyl chitosan (CEC), acrylic acid (AA), an FeCl3 water solution and a CaCl2 watersolution into de-ionized water according to a certain ratio and carrying out ultrasonic treatment to obtain a uniform and transparent solution; then carrying out vacuum deoxygenation on the solution;adding an ammonium persulfate (APS) water solution and a catalyst N,N,N',N'-tetramethyldiethylamine (TEMED) in sequence under the protection of nitrogen gas; reacting for at least 4h under the condition of 30 to 50 DEG C, so as to prepare the physical hydrogel. The physical hydrogel provided by the invention has excellent mechanical properties and self-repairing properties; metal ions are introduced so that the gel has certain ionic conductivity; furthermore, an application range of the chitosan based self-repairing hydrogel is expanded; the high-toughness self-repairing physical hydrogel ishopefully applied to fields including wearable flexible electronic devices, soft-bodied robots, biomedicines, aerospace and the like.

The invention discloses dual-network hydrogel with high-toughness, shape-memory and self-repairing characteristics and a preparation method of the dual-network hydrogel The dual-network hydrogel is formed by alternate arrangement of dual networks, a first network is a dynamic imine linkage network formed by Schiff base reaction of chitosan and polyethylene glycol with aldehyde groups at two ends,and a second network is a polyacrylamide cross-linked network The preparation method mainly includes: dissolving N-carboxyethyl chitosan, acrylamide, N,N'-methylene bisacrylamide into water according to a certain proportion, and adding modified polyethylene glycol and ammonium persulfate mixed solution; performing reaction at 30-50 DEG C to obtain the dual-network hydrogel The dual-network hydrogel prepared according to the preparation method is excellent in mechanical performance and self-repairing performance and has a shape memory performance of pH and metal ion stimulation response, anapplication range of chitosan self-repairing hydrogel materials is further expanded, and the dual-network hydrogel is hopefully applied to fields of wearable flexible electronic devices, software robots, biomedicine, aerospace engineering and the like
