This paper presents a literature survey of more than twenty years on AC/DC multilevel converters with reduced switch count, in which some power switches can be removed letting only diodes. This simplification reduces the number of gate drivers, cost and complexity of the system. In this work, the considered topologies are derived from the conventional multilevel configurations on literature: Neutral Point Clamped, Cascaded H-Bridge, Flying Capacitor, Modular Multilevel Converter and T-Type. This article is divided in five sections, each one with papers with topologies derived from the five multilevel configurations previously mentioned. In each section, there are up to a maximum of four subsections, considering the main focus of each paper and contribution: derived and hybrid topologies, control techniques, analysis and hardware and design. At the end of each section, a summary table concerning the referenced papers is shown containing comparison information among the presented references in terms of: number of components per phase of the studied converter, applied modulation technique, applied control technique, suggested application given by the authors, converter’s output power considered and the respective efficiency considering this point of operation. With this extensive bibliography work, this paper serves as a very good reference to researchers interested in the topic to initiate their work or to update their studies. Also, the applications suggested by the authors give a direction of which topologies fit best different applications.

A Survey on Multilevel Rectifiers With Reduced Switch Count

High power supply for imaging systems needs to meet increasing demand in speed, power and voltage control. A Vienna-type three-phase rectifier prototype has been developed by GE Healthcare to handle it. This power supply has a significant stability issue because its load has a pulsed profile, and the ranges of power demand, input voltage, and grid impedance are wide. First, a model of the rectifier and its control has been made. Second, a current loop stability analysis has been investigated. Stability margins have been drawn for all the range of output power, input voltage and grid inductance for the current loop. Stability has been shown for all the operating points. However, a poorly damped input filter brings potential oscillations and reduces stability margins. Delay margins are also particularly low. Finally, a validation of the rectifier model has been made with measurements on the prototype.

The power supply of a medical imaging system deals with a wide power range pulsed load. For a Vienna-type three-phase rectifier, the input current can therefore be in Discontinuous Conduction Mode (DCM) as well as in Continuous Conduction Mode (CCM). While Vienna modelling in CCM case and stability issues for a wide range of operating point have already been studied. A proper modelling for stability study in DCM case has not been made yet. A new linearised DCM model is presented and validated in this paper. DCM is shown more stable but more sensitive according to the operating point than CCM.

Input Currents DCM Modelling of a Vienna-based Rectifier

As Boost-type topology, three-phase Vienna rectifier has the inherent problem of increasing output voltage at partial load. In this paper, a duty-ratio feedforward strategy based on dual-loop control is proposed to solve this problem. The comparison between a three-phase three-wire system and a three-phase four-wire system reveals that the main feature of the former is the zero-sequence component, which will not affect THD. It provides a theoretical basis for calculating three-phase feedforward respectively and carry it out in abc-domain. The feasibility of duty-ratio feedforward in other coordinate systems has also been demonstrated. Finally, the simulation and experimental results are given, which are compared with the commonly used grid-voltage feedforward in the dq-domain, to verify that the proposed feedforward strategy can not only operate stably at partial load, but also optimize THD to a certain extent.
