Urbanizing villages: informal morphologies in Shenzhen’s urban periphery

AbstractThis paper explores the survival condition of the rural villages within the megacity of the Pearl River Delta area. The megacity project, connecting Hong Kong-Guangdong-Macau as a greater bay area, is one of the most rapid urbanization processes in the world. Rural land is greatly consumed and villages are standing in-between the unified megacity development and self-preservation. Urban sprawl, especially with the megacity development, land acquiring leaves villages no time or space for exquisite planning, and to respond. The notion of resilience starts to grow in different ways among the villages. Some heritage-like family temples, streets and old buildings are self-renovated and sustained by implementing new programs and space. These cases reveal the major local resilience in terms of culture, industry and tradition, which macroscopic development is normally hard to cover. The model of the resilient village is proposed to articulate the significance of local factors, understand the village condition and help them sufficiently adapt to the city’s influence while preserving its legacy. Studying Hua Chong Village (Foshan), Xia Ba Village (Dongguan) and Dong Bian Village (Foshan) as practical cases, this paper will document and analyze the resilient condition of each on village fabric, program and streetscape. The objective of this paper aims to combine evidence conclusively as a systematic model of a resilient village in the evaluation of their survival. Based on the factors in the model, the purpose of the study seeks the possibility to reclaim the vanishing authenticity and culture from the villages, which is diverse considering the amount of 50,000 square kilometers and cultural differences. Hence, the model of a resilient village, not only dissects the current condition but also provides a pragmatic vision for the villages to keep the diversity and beneficially contribute back to the megacity.KeywordsResilienceVillageMegacityRevitalizationPearl river delta

Incremental transformation of a traditional village in China’s Pearl River Delta

Villages in the cities (VICs) exhibit all the contradictions of contemporary Chinese urbanisation. These historic settlements attracted large floating populations during the booming urban economy, which redefined their morphological assets. Moreover, their urban persistence reflects the social and cultural modifications occurring within metropolises. Municipal governments’ attention was drawn to the extraordinary densification process, triggering negotiation regarding urban upgrades and social engagement alongside the overall transformation of VICs. Despite the broad scientific literature on VIC redevelopment, especially from urban and social studies perspectives, little attention has been paid to the spatial and monetary compensation awarded for forced or planned demolitions. The transition from informal agglomerations to residential compounds implies the action of local authorities cooperating with real estate developers to make existing house ownership the basis of compensation for measurable spaces in new typological configurations defined by radical social shifts. Lijiao village in Guangzhou was selected as a case study to observe how its urban renewal programme affected the evaluation of historic building preservation versus large selective demolition. Cultural heritage and spatial compensation have become the cornerstones for reconfiguring the village’s morphology and the everyday life experiences framed by interested local groups’ mediation.

Socio-Spatial ‘Tabula Rasa’ and Punctual Preservation: The Case Study of Measurable Compensation in Lijiao Village

This chapter revisits the locations of six urban design proposals in the Pearl River Delta that were completed and presented to decision makers. Starting in 2007, proposals were completed with successive groups of young design professionals from the University of California at Berkeley and the South China University of Technology in Guangzhou. Our work over the years addressed two major regional concerns: water management strategies in low-lying delta communities and design proposals to counter-displacement of residents forced out by large-scale land redevelopment processes. The first concern led us to design strategies that address tidal and riverine flood risks when combined with seasonal monsoon events; the second concern addressed the social and economic future of residents in rural and urban communities by proposing small-scale community-driven responses versus medium to large-scale land re-adjustments that became typical in the fast-growing delta region since the 1980s. In evaluating our past work, we compare and analyse present conditions at six locations. The conclusion of our analysis points to the fact that our work over the years has reduced some of the potential harm to communities, but that only more deliberate planning decisions could produce sustainable solutions in the long term. 

Unrelenting Change

Chinese cities have experienced unprecedented growth and transformation in the recent decades. Urban expansion into former agricultural land and the incorporation of villages into urbanized areas are commonly observed. This paper focuses on the current city extension of Foshan into the river landscape of the Pearl River Delta. The authors examine a group of water villages that will become part of Foshan's new city centre. A morphological analysis of settlement forms is used in combination with a fluvial morphological analysis of the water system. Through direct observation, select interviews with villagers, mapping and measurements, an international design team developed proposals demonstrating how social and ecological conditions can be incorporated into the design of Foshan's new urban centre, producing a transformation that has roots in the village's essential spatial structure and the functioning of its water system.
