Ultraconformable strain gauge can be applied directly to human skin for continuous motion activity monitoring, which has seen widespread application in interactive robotics, human motion detection, personal health monitoring, and therapeutics. However, the development of an on-skin strain gauge that can detect human body motions over a long period of time without disturbing the natural skin movements remains a challenge. Here, we present an ultrathin and durable nanomesh strain gauge for continuous motion activity monitoring that minimizes mechanical constraints on natural skin motions. The device is made from reinforced polyurethane-polydimethylsiloxane (PU-PDMS) nanomeshes and exhibits excellent sustainability, linearity, and durability with low hysteresis. Its thinness geometry and softness provide minimum mechanical interference on natural skin deformations. During speech, the nanomesh-attached face exhibits skin strain mapping comparable to that of a face without nanomeshes. We demonstrate long-term facial stain mapping during speech and the capability for real-time stable full-range body movement detection.

A durable nanomesh on-skin strain gauge for natural skin motion monitoring with minimum mechanical constraints.

Over the past few decades, flexible sensors have been developed from the “electronic” level to the “iontronic” level, and gradually to the “ionic” level. Ionic flexible sensors (IFS) are one kind of advanced sensors that are based on the concept of ion migration. Compared to conventional electronic sensors, IFS can not only replicate the topological structures of human skin, but also are capable of achieving tactile perception functions similar to that of human skin, which provide effective tools and methods for narrowing the gap between conventional electronics and biological interfaces. In this review, the latest research and developments on several typical sensing mechanisms, compositions, structural design, and applications of IFS are comprehensively reviewed. Particularly, the development of novel ionic materials, structural designs, and biomimetic approaches has resulted in the development of a wide range of novel and exciting IFS, which can effectively sense pressure, strain, and humidity with high sensitivity and reliability, and exhibit self‐powered, self‐healing, biodegradability, and other properties of the human skin. Furthermore, the typical applications of IFS in artificial skin, human‐interactive technologies, wearable health monitors, and other related fields are reviewed. Finally, the perspectives on the current challenges and future directions of IFS are presented.

Ionic Flexible Sensors: Mechanisms, Materials, Structures, and Applications

Epidermal electronics have been developed with gas/sweat permeability for long-term wearable electrophysiological monitoring. However, the state-of-the-art breathable epidermal electronics ignore the sweat accumulation and immersion at the skin/device interface, resulting in serious degradation of the interfacial conformality and adhesion, leading to signal artifacts with unstable and inaccurate biopotential measurements. Here, the authors present an all-nanofiber-based Janus epidermal electrode endowed with directional sweat transport properties for artifact-free biopotential monitoring. The designed Janus multilayered membrane (≈15 µm) of superhydrophilic-hydrolyzed-polyacrylonitrile (HPAN)/polyurethane (PU)/Ag nanowire (AgNW) can quickly (less than 5 s) drive sweat away from the skin/electrode interface while resisting its penetration in the reverse direction. Along with the medical adhesive (MA)-reinforced junction-nodes, the adhesion strength among the heterogeneous interfaces can be greatly enhanced for robust mechanical-electrical stability. Therefore, their measured on-body electromyography (EMG) and electrocardiography (ECG) signals are free of sweat artifacts with negligible degradation and baseline drift compared to commercial Ag/AgCl gel electrodes and hydrophilic textile electrodes. This work paves a way to design novel directional-sweat-permeable epidermal electronics that can be conformally attached under sweaty conditions for long-term biopotential monitoring and shows the potential to apply epidermal electronics to many challenging conditions.

The importance of continuous monitoring of skin hydration in daily life, to aid in the diagnosis of skin diseases, is rising. Electrodes that can be worn directly on the skin are attracting attention as an effective means. However, they should not inhibit natural water evaporation from the skin and should not cause inflammation or irritation even if they are attached to the body for long periods of time. In this study, nanomesh electrodes that have previously been reported to exhibit high biocompatibility are also found to exhibit high water vapor permeability, resulting in properties that prevent skin dampness. Furthermore, the skin impedance measured using nanomesh electrodes is found to correlate with the hydration level of skin measured using existing medical equipment. This study provides a new approach to measure skin hydration in conditions close to bare skin.
