Urban resources environment carrying capacity (URECC) is considered as a significant yardstick for guiding the practice towards sustainable urban development. It helps measure the interaction between human activities and urban resources environment system. Although existing studies on URECC have made great progress, there is still no consensus on the definition and evaluation method for URECC. In line with this background, this study proposes a theoretical method named URECC-LC from the load-and-carrier innovative perspective. In developing this method, urban resources environment is considered as a system, and the novel concepts of urban loads (UL) and urban carriers (UC) are introduced. Subsequently, the measurement of URECC is built up by incorporating both urban loads and carriers. This new method can be applied to evaluate effectively and properly the state of URECC. Several novel insights for this innovative method are highlighted as: (a) sustainable development based URECC assessment; (b) extension of URECC implication to urban resilience; (c) virtual threshold for measuring the limitation of URECC. Taking urban water resources environment as an example, a case demonstration with reference to cities Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai and Chongqing in China is conducted, and the case results shows: (1) Beijing, Shanghai and Tianjin represents a URECC deficit state for water resources environment almost every year (2004–2017) and Chongqing shows a URECC surplus state during the whole surveyed period; (2) the resilience of urban water resources environment is differing between the four case cities; (3) Shanghai has the highest possibility (risk) for water resources environment carrying capacity to be overloaded, and the water resources environment carrying capacity in Chongqing has been less utilized. The demonstration conducted proves that the introduced URECC-LC method is applicable and effective in evaluating URECC. And this new method provides significant theoretical basis for studying urban resources environments.

Evaluation of the comprehensive carrying capacity of interprovincial water resources in China and the spatial effect

Urban environment has evolved over time and space, as the outcome of dynamic interactions between socioeconomic and biophysical processes operating over multiple scales. In the case of infinite expansion of urban population and human activities beyond “limit of urban capacity,” local urbanites would never achieve prosperity, but also be disordered by deteriorations within socioeconomic and ecological aspects. On this basis, this study aims to suggest a GIS-based model, combined of TOPSIS along with fuzzy modeling, in GIS environ, in order to evaluate Urban Environment Carrying Capacity. Suggested model was planned on the basis of desirable and the maximum accepted limits of chosen indicators, used to determine hot spots. To this aim, Shemiran City was studied. Results showed that at the studied area, 43, 44 and 10% had Degree 2 (low pressure), Degree 3 (median pressure) and Degree 4 (maximum pressure) of carrying capacity, respectively; also, only 3% was at critical state. None of the studied districts has desirable degree of carrying capacity.

Combination of GISFM and TOPSIS to evaluation of Urban Environment Carrying Capacity (Case study: Shemiran City, Iran)

Though we are in urgent need of environmental warnings to slow environmental deterioration, currently, there is no internationally concise method for environmental warnings. In addition, the existing approaches do not combine the three aspects of ecology, resources, and environment. At the same time, the three elements of the environment (air, water, and soil) are separated in most environmental warning systems. Thus, the method this paper gives is an innovative attempt and aims to make environmental assessment more practical. This paper establishes the index system of an environmental early warning based on the Driving–Pressure–State–Influence–Response (DPSIR) model. The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method was used to determine the weights. Next, single and integrated index methods further assess the environmental warning state, in which the weighted summation method is used to summarize the data and results. The case of Tianjin is used to confirm the applicability of this method. In conclusion, the method in this paper is more well-behaved and, therefore, more suitable to assist cities in their environmental assessment.

Environmental Warning System Based on the DPSIR Model: A Practical and Concise Method for Environmental Assessment

Ambon is a city with the highest economic and population growth in Maluku Province, which makes built-up land have high and rapid growth so that it can reduce the carrying capacity of the city's land. This can lead to an imbalance between population and available housing and may result in higher population pressure on available areas. Prediction of spatial modeling is needed as a preventive measure to prevent excessive land cover changes in the future. This study aims to analyze the carrying capacity of residential areas and spatial modeling of land cover changes in Ambon City in 2010, 2015, and 2020 using Cellular Automata Markov Chain (CAMC) and identify settlement patterns based on population density in 2031 in Ambon city. The results of the Cellular Automata Markov Chain (CAMC) analysis show that the residential area in 2031 has increased to 7,910.03 ha and the development of residential areas in 2031 in Ambon City is centered on Sirimau District.

Modeling of Cellular Automata Markov Chain for Predicting the Carrying Capacity of Ambon City

The growth of urbanization in Yogyakarta area has a significant impact on environmental degradation. One of the indications is the environmental carrying capacity and environmental settlement quality that tend to decrease. The research was aimed to analyze the environmental carrying capacity of the settlement land resources and water resources as the development base of sustainable settlement in Yogyakarta Urban Area (YUA). The research method used a studio analysis based on primary and secondary data and available mathematical formulas. The results showed that the carrying capacity of settlement land resources in YUA reached 2.89 or conditionally-save. In addition, the analysis of water resources carrying capacity in YUA indicated a conditionally-save result with the value of 2.44. Land resources carrying capacity is considered as save when reaching 22.73%, conditionally save when the value is 60.60%, and overshoot when it reaches 16.67%. Meanwhile, water resources carrying capacity is entitled save if the value is 15.15%, conditionally-save if it reaches 74.24%, and overshoot if reaching 10.61%.

Analysis of Environmental Carrying Capacity for the Development of Sustainable Settlement in Yogyakarta Urban Area

Tourism based on local resource potentials are believed to be capable of driving self-sufficiency and welfare of village community. To steadily improve tourist attraction, promotional efforts conforming to technological advancement and society behavior are required, among which is social media platform. The research is aimed at examining the management of social media account of Taman Lazuardi in Susukan Village, Banyumas District, Central Java Province, Indonesia to increase tourist visiting interest. Data are collected using Focus Group Discussion, in-depth interview, and documentation, and analyzed using interactive data analysis. The result of which indicated that the management of social media account is not optimum yet and specific communication strategy to increase tourist visiting interest is still lacking, caused by phases of Marketing Public Relations (problem identification, planning and programming, action and communication, and governance evaluation) that are not yet performed by the management of Taman Lazuardi. To that end, assistance in preparing the system and human resources is required. Further, it is aimed at optimizing social media to be effectively utilized in marketing village tourism.
