They address what can be learned empirically, methodologically and theoretically from each area. The topic chapters explore issues that are of current interest, why they matter, and what is already known. They include discussion of motivational context, implications for practice, and open questions which might suggest future research. Novice Programmers and Introductory Programming

This review discusses recent literature on computer programming. It focuses on psychological studies of programming and selected issues related to instruction in programming. The purpose is to inform computer educators about the nature of the cognitive processes involved in programming, and the potential benefits to be gained from learning programming. Concerns relevant to pre-college students of programming are emphasized. The literature reviewed includes empirical studies of programming, rational analyses of the programming task by computer scientists, and expository essays by educators and psychologists. The literature is presented to illuminate three major issues: 1) what are the cognitive demands of programming and what are the possible cognitive outcomes? 2) how does instruction influence learning? 3) who benefits, and in what ways, from instruction?

The Demands and Requirements of Computer Programming: A Literature Review:

Teachers have been educating students about computing for many years. For almost as many years, computing education researchers have been studying, in particular, how students learn programming and how to improve that process. Programming languages such as Fortran (1957) and COBOL (1959) were originally invented to be easier than assembler and other early notations so that programming could be made available to a wider range of programmers. Programming languages such as BASIC (1964) and Pascal (1970) were invented explicitly to ease learning how to program. In the late 1960’s, researchers started gathering data, studying how learners were learning programming, when they did not, and how they experienced programming.

XS-0 is a low-cost interactive system that serves as a self-explanatory school computer. Particular attention has been devoted to making the man-machine dialog easy to follow for the inexperienced user. The system includes a course on computer programming, a programming system for writing, editing, executing, and debugging programs interactively, and a filing system containing private and public libraries. The language offered to the user is a version of Pascal. The system is realized on a small stand-alone computer which supports a small number of graphic terminals. This hardware consists of the most cost effective components currently on the market.
