Binary metal sulfides are a large material family with distinct physical behavior. Here, we report the superconductivity observed in PbS by means of pressure engineering. PbS undergoes a series of electronic phase transitions upon compression, and superconductivity occurs above 23.9 GPa in the high-pressure CsCl-type cubic phase. Further compression suppresses the superconductivity while the ${T}_{c}$ is reduced from $\ensuremath{\sim}12.0$ K at 23.9 GPa to 6.8 K at 44.3 GPa. Marginally higher ${T}_{c}\ensuremath{\approx}12.3$ K is observed at 19.1 GPa during pressure release. The magnetic field effect verifies the superconductivity with possible multiband features. It is noted that PbS is one of the few binary metal sulfide superconductors with a ${T}_{c}$ above 10 K. This work demonstrates that PbS has a high ${T}_{c}$ under a moderate pressure due to the chemical ``precompression'' effect, which is very close to the ${T}_{c}$ in pure sulfur at $\ensuremath{\sim}100$ GPa. PbS also shows unexpected multiband behavior in the cubic structure, benefiting the study of pressure-induced superconductivity and the underlying mechanism in metal sulfide compounds. 

Superconductivity above 12 K with possible multiband features in CsCl-type PbS

The structural and superconducting properties of a Bi-based compound, Bi2Rh3Se2, are investigated over a wide pressure range. Bi2Rh3Se2 is a superconductor with a superconducting transition temperature, Tc, of 0.7 K. This compound is in a charge-density-wave (CDW) state below 240 K, which implies the coexistence of superconducting and CDW states at low temperatures. Here, the superconducting properties of Bi2Rh3Se2 are studied from the perspective of the temperature dependence of electrical resistance (R) at high pressures (p's). The pressure dependence of Tc of Bi2Rh3Se2 shows a slow increase in Tc at 0-15.5 GPa, and the Tc slowly decreases with pressure above 15.5 GPa, which is markedly different from that of normal superconductors because the value of Tc should simply decrease owing to the decrease in density of states (DOS) on the Fermi level, N(εF), driven by a simple shrinkage of the lattice under pressure. To ascertain the origin of such a dome-like Tc-p behavior, the crystal structure of Bi2Rh3Se2 was explored over a wide pressure range of 0-20 GPa on the basis of powder X-ray diffraction; no structural phase transitions or simple shrinkage of the lattice was observed. This result implies that the increase in Tc against pressure cannot simply be explained from a structural point of view. In other words, a direct relation between superconductivity and crystal structure was not found. On the other hand, the CDW transition became ambiguous at pressures higher than 3.8 GPa, suggesting that the Tc had been suppressed by the CDW transition in a low pressure range. Thus, the findings suggest that for Bi2Rh3Se2, Tc is enhanced through the suppression of CDW transition, which may be reasonable because the CDW-ordered state restrains the charge fluctuation to weaken the electron-phonon coupling and opens the gap to decrease the density of states on the Fermi level. The obtained dome-like Tc-p behavior indicates the possibility of Bi2Rh3Se2 being an exotic superconductor.

Pressure Dependence of Superconductivity in a Charge-Density-Wave Superconductor Bi2Rh3Se2.

The review summarizes certain theoretical and experimental studies of the quasiparticle, J, and Josephson, IJ, currents between superconductors partially dielectrized with charge-density waves (CDWs). A relation between the Cooper and electron-hole pairings and their manifestations in high-Tc oxides have been analyzed. It was shown that the CDW fingerprints can be found in a lot of already observed dependences. All described results are considered in the framework of the historical context.

Coexistence of superconductivity and charge-density waves: evidence from tunneling studies (Review article)

Revealing local lattice distortions in physical systems is nontrivial, largely because such structural features often are not necessarily amenable to traditional crystallographic investigations. This poses limits to our understanding of the underlying physics, particularly in the case of strongly correlated systems where structural, electronic, and magnetic degrees of freedom are intertwined. Using resonant total x-ray scattering coupled to differential pair distribution function analysis, we reveal the presence of pronounced local lattice distortions in the square net Pt planes in the prototypical strongly correlated $A{\mathrm{Pt}}_{2}{\mathrm{X}}_{2}$ intermetallics ($A=\mathrm{U}$, Ce, or La and $X=\mathrm{Si}$ or Ge). The distortions are present before charge density wave, magnetic, Kondo lattice coherence, and/or superconducting orders emerge in these materials and, as density functional calculations suggest, are likely to affect them. Our study sheds light on the poorly known interactions between electronic orders and structural disorder in strongly correlated systems. It also demonstrates an advanced experimental approach to determine them that is relevant to any physical system showing deviations from perfect crystallinity.

Thickness dependence of superconductivity in layered GeP5

Prior to the superconducting transition at ${T}_{\mathrm{c}}\ensuremath{\approx}1.5\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\mathrm{K}$, the pyrite-type ${\mathrm{CuS}}_{2}$ undergoes a charge-density-wave (CDW) transition at ${T}_{\mathrm{s}}\ensuremath{\approx}150\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\mathrm{K}$ at ambient pressure. Here we studied the interplay between CDW and superconductivity (SC) in ${\mathrm{CuS}}_{2}$ by tracking their evolutions with pressure via detailed measurements of resistivity and magnetic susceptibility under hydrostatic pressures up to 6.6 GPa. The high-quality ${\mathrm{CuS}}_{2}$ samples used in the present study were synthesized under high-pressure and high-temperature conditions, and the formation of the $2\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}2\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}2$ supercell associated with the commensurate CDW order below ${T}_{\mathrm{s}}$ was confirmed by low-temperature transmission electron microscope. Our high-pressure results uncover a pressure-driven superconducting dome with an enhanced ${{T}_{\mathrm{c}}}^{max}\ensuremath{\sim}2.3\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\mathrm{K}$ at $\ensuremath{\sim}1.8\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\mathrm{GPa}$ accompanying the gradual suppression of the CDW order. This work thus demonstrates the competing nature between CDW and SC in the pyrite-type superconductor ${\mathrm{CuS}}_{2}$.
