An efficient multibody dynamic model was developed to predict the vibrating transmitted gear forces of loaded and unloaded pairs of helical gears simultaneously at all speeds. The model can also calculate the bearing forces of a manual transmission that, in turn, may be converted to rattling noises. The bending of meshing gear teeth and torsional flexibility of transmission shafts were considered and embodied effectively in the multibody dynamic model by calculating the tooth bending stiffness and adding a torsion spring on a shaft section between two gears, respectively. The reactive forces on teeth and bearings were calculated and compared using three different models that were developed for this study — an equivalent model, a rigid-body model, and a frequency-based model. The equivalent model took only 58% computation time, compared to the frequency-based method, even though the two showed very similar results.

Prediction of vibrating forces on meshing gears for a gear rattle using a new multi-body dynamic model

We propose a 3-dimensional model of a mold oscillator to predict how design parameters affect its dynamic characteristics. The model considers the geometry of each part, and the relations between components. The proposed model considered the influence of the gear mesh and the geometry of the eccentric shaft on caster oscillation. The caster took a different excitation according the status of exciting force transfer. Even though caster and driving crank were connected by an intermediate process, the angular velocity of the driving crank was primarily shown as odd harmonic terms in the behavior of caster. Additionally, the gear mesh contact force determined the caster’s oscillation at low frequency. To verify the model, the previous approach for designing oscillating system was compared to the suggested model, and the sensitivity of the caster to the geometry of the eccentric shaft was analyzed. The gear mesh stiffness and the geometry of eccentric shaft were represented by the Fourier series. The equation of motion for oscillating system was solved by the numerical method, NEWMARK. To analyze coupled motion, the dynamic response of coordinate was analyzed in the time-frequency domain using the Fourier transform.

As the speed of rotating machines increases and also their weight decreases, the coupling between lateral and torsional vibrations must be considered. In the past, rotordynamics and geardynamics have tended to treat the lateral and torsional vibrations of the system elements as separate and decoupled mechanisms. In the paper, the coupled lateral-torsional free and forced vibration of rotors trained by gears is analyzed using finite element method. Also the complicated variation of the meshing stiffness as a function of contact point along the line of action is estimated correctly. The gear mesh model is assumed to be linear with constant average mesh stiffness.
