This paper evaluates the Pugh Controlled Convergence method and its relationship to recent developments in design theory. Computer executable models are proposed simulating a team of people involved in iterated cycles of evaluation, ideation, and investigation. The models suggest that: (1) convergence of the set of design concepts is facilitated by the selection of a strong datum concept; (2) iterated use of an evaluation matrix can facilitate convergence of expert opinion, especially if used to plan investigations conducted between matrix runs; and (3) ideation stimulated by the Pugh matrices can provide large benefits both by improving the set of alternatives and by facilitating convergence. As a basis of comparison, alternatives to Pugh’s methods were assessed such as using a single summary criterion or using a Borda count. These models suggest that Pugh’s method, under a substantial range of assumptions, results in better design outcomes than those from these alternative procedures.

The Pugh Controlled Convergence method: model-based evaluation and implications for design theory

Danish organic outdoor gardeners today use 50-300 hours per hectare for manual weeding.
Through automatic controlling of an existing commercial machine this often heavy and costconsuming
weeding will be eliminated. At the same time, a fully-automatic registration of field
activities will contribute to the efficient implementation of EU directive 178/2002 concerning
traceability in the primary production and thereby enhance the food-safety in the production
chain. A radio controlled slope mower is equipped with a new robotic accessory kit. This
transforms it into a tool carrier (HortiBot) for high-tech plant nursing for e.g. organic grown
vegetables. The HortiBot is capable of passing over several parcels with visible rows
autonomously based on a new commercial row detection system from Eco-Dan a/s, Denmark.
This paper presents the solutions chosen for the HortiBot with regard to hardware, mechanicalelectrical
interfaces and software. Further, the principles from a Quality Function Deployment
(QFD) analysis was used to carry out the solicitation, evaluation and selection of most qualified
design parameters and specifications attained to a horticultural robotic tool carrier. The QFD
analysis provided a specific measure to evaluate each selected parameter in terms of satisfying
user requirements and operational performance aspects. Based on a combination of importance
rating and competitive priority ratings important user requirements include easy adaptation to
field conditions in terms of row distance and parcel size, profitability, minimum crop damage
during operation, and reliability. Lesser importance was attributed to affection value, attractive
look, the possibility of out of season usage, and the use of renewable energy.

An Evaluation of the Pugh Controlled Convergence Method

Today, with globalization, an important characteristic of a car’s brand should be its clear and precise identity. In order to obtain a successful brand, company managers should continuously be innovative without forgetting the product history of the brand and should use the culture of the country as a value system and as an inspirational background. The goal of this paper is to analyse the relationship between the car’s style and some implicit references such as the culture identity of a specific country. The analysis is carried out on the basis of the extracted data on and study of characteristic styling lines of the cars. French cars (Peugeot, Citroen and Renault) as well as German cars (Volkswagen) are selected and analysed. It is found that specific styling lines are particular to French cars. From this analysis, it is concluded that a French style identity is implicitly embedded in the car’s design.
