Expansive soils are problematic soils which pose a risk to the safety of civil engineering structures. These soils can be treated by compaction or by adding additives to the soil. Where the strength and properties of expansive soil cannot be improved via mechanical stabilisation (Compaction), a desirable strength can be achieved through the use of chemical admixture techniques. The swelling and shrinkage of expansive soils cause movement in the soil mass resulting in a deferential settlement in engineering structures such as roads and building leading to cracks and subsequent failure leading to high cost of maintenance. Calcium based additives such as cement and lime have been used in expansive subgrade stabilisation to enhance the strength, reduce swell and subsequent differential settlement. However, the growing concerns on carbon dioxide (CO2) emission and climate change have reignited the need for a more sustainable soil stabilisation techniques using waste materials. In this study, non-traditional expansive subgrade treatment techniques using sustainable waste materials with respect to their efficiency in improving the geotechnical engineering properties of the subgrade materials have been investigated and reviewed. This study also discusses the engineering problems associated with expansive soils, proposing an effective, efficient, cheaper and sustainable application of non-traditional stabilisers in expansive soil stabilisation. The study concludes that, the addition of non-traditional stabilisers in expansive subgrade stabilisation using chemical stabilisation techniques can improve the engineering properties of expansive subgrade materials.

Understanding the performance of expansive subgrade materials treated with non-traditional stabilisers: A review

The utilization of substance stabilizer in soil improvement can diminish the obstructive ecological effect in the development business, and respond as the soil stabilizers to the kaolin clay soils. In any case, the improvement of kaolin clay stays a test because of the significant expense and non-eco-accommodating materials like concrete and lime. This examination exhibits the capacity of SF in the mix with ESA in stabilizing the delicate kaolin clay soils, by means of particle size distribution (PSD), specific gravity, Atterberg limits, compaction parameters and undrained shear strength (USS) parameters. Its impact on the undrained shear strength upgrade was concentrated through the concrete substitution material in kaolin clay soil at the replacement degree of 2%, 4% and 6% (by dry weight of kaolin clay soil) of SF and ESA replacements of 3%, 6% and 9% (by dry weight of kaolin clay and SF content). The consideration of SF with ESA shows a lower specific gravity (4.9% decrease), lower plasticity index (PI) (48.4% decrease), diminished maximum dry density (MDD) (5.5% decrease), expanded in optimum moisture content (OMC) (8.7% increase), and higher USS (68.8%) when contrasted with the untreated kaolin clay soils and those treated with SF. The blends of SF and ESA as soil adjustment specialists effectively upgrade the undrained shear strength of the kaolin clay soils up to 68.8% strength improvement with the best percentage of 6% SF and 6% ESA for optimum enhancement of the expansive soil, which minimizing the expenses and as an eco-accommodating materials in soil improvement.

Heave and load-settlement behaviour of a chemically stabilised expansive clay bed

This note presents the effect of lime, cement, fly ash and ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) on free swell index (FSI), liquid limit (LL), plasticity index (PI), compaction characteristics, hydraulic conductivity (k) and strength characteristics of an expansive soil. The effect of the above chemicals on California bearing ratio (CBR) is also presented. Lime content was 0, 1, 2, 4 and 6% and the amounts of other additives were 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20% by dry weight of the soil. FSI, LL and PI decreased significantly with increasing additive contents. Compaction characteristics also improved with increasing additive contents. Strength characteristics showed improvement at higher additive contents especially at higher curing periods. CBR (determined in soaked condition) also increased significantly with increasing additive contents.
