Short-time plasma surface modification of HDPE powder in a Plasma Downer Reactor – process, wettability improvement and ageing effects

A process for the in-flight surface treatment of powders using a Dielectric Barrier Discharge Torch operating at atmospheric pressures or soft vacuum conditions is described herein. The process comprising feeding a powder material into the Dielectric Barrier Discharge Torch yielding powder particles exhibiting a reduced powder agglomeration feature; in-flight modifying the surface properties of the particles; and collecting coated powder particles. An apparatus for surface treating micro- and nanoparticles comprising a Dielectric Barrier Discharge Torch operating at atmospheric pressure or soft vacuum conditions is also described herein.

The surface activation of high-density polyethylene powder using a remote plasma process at atmospheric pressure is investigated. The developed circulating fluidized bed plasma reactor enables to carry fine-grained powder particles repetitively through the afterglow of 64 dielectric barrier discharges of argon with O2 and CO2 admixtures. The evolution of particle size distribution during conveying in the reactor is monitored by laser diffraction and reveals that only a small particle fraction is lost during the process. The contact angle of activated powder samples steadily decreases with increasing treatment time. The surface activation is most effective for O2 admixtures of 0.25 vol% and CO2 admixtures of above approximately 1 vol%, respectively.

Polymer Powder Treatment in Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Circulating Fluidized Bed Reactor

A Far Cold Remote Nitrogen Plasma is used both to fluidize and to treat a polyethylene powder in order to increase its hydrophilic character. The evolution of the wettability of the powder as well as the one of its physical (density, particles size distribution, average diameter, shape factor, and BET surface area) and flow properties (angle of repose, angle of slide, and Hausner index) are determined versus various experimental conditions. It is shown that the plasma treatment efficiency is strongly dependant on the oxygen content of the nitrogen flow and on the velocity of fluidizing gas. Best wettability is obtained by the addition of 0.75% of O2 in the nitrogen plasma gas and with a high gas velocity. It is also evidenced that the flowability of the powder is slightly altered by the plasma treatment.
