A full-wave hybrid field-theoretic method is presented for accurate and efficient computer-aided design of complete microwave or millimeter-wave radiating components comprising stepped rectangular-waveguide mode converters and horn transitions including the effect of the aperture radiating into half-space. The method combines the complete six-field-component modal S-matrix formulation, for the double-plane waveguide discontinuity problem of the throat section, with the full-component moment solution for the aperture problem. Two orthogonally polarized sets of rooftop basis functions are utilized to model the magnetic surface currents in the apertures. All important design parameters are rigorously taken into account by the design theory. The method is verified by comparison with available measured data for pyramidal horn transitions. Two design examples for stepped multimode horn transitions are presented. One example has been optimized with regard to pattern symmetry and achieves nearly identical E- and H-plane patterns from 10.8 to 11.2 GHz. The second example with optimized cross-polarization behavior shows -50-dB maximum cross-polarization level at 11 GHz. >

Rigorous hybrid field theoretic design of stepped rectangular waveguide mode converters including the horn transitions into half-space

The authors analyze rigorously single and twin radiating waveguides by means of a singular integral equation approach which includes the edge condition on the apertures from the start. The above inclusion has an important bearing on convergence and matrix size, enabling highly accurate solutions to be obtained with few test functions, typically two to four. This becomes particularly important in the case of multiple coupled radiators, where matrix sizes increase as the product of the number of radiators times the number of test functions. Theoretical and experimental results are compared for the two important cases of two radiators with parallel narrow walls and with parallel broad walls and are found to be in very good agreement. >

Singular integral equation analysis of flange-mounted rectangular waveguide radiators

Two formulations are presented for the mutual admittance of rotated rectangular apertures in a ground plane. One extends an earlier solution, and the other is a third-order asymptotic formula that is shown to be accurate when the apertures satisfy the Rayleigh distance criterion. These formulations are combined with a conventional mode-matching approach to study coupling between rotated horns. Results are presented for both coupling formulations, and these demonstrate excellent agreement with experiment for coplanar pyramidal and sectoral horns. >

Electromagnetic band-gap (EBG) structures exhibit unique electromagnetic properties that have led to a wide range of applications to the antenna and propagation fields. This paper investigates the performance of a waveguide end-slot phased array (WESPA) antenna integrated with mushroom-like EBG structures. The mushroom-like EBG structure has the advantage of compactness and offers the capability to block the surface wave coupling of the phased array, which provides a possible solution to the "blind spots" problem of the WESPA. Some novel and efficient EBG array configurations are proposed, and an infinite phased array and a finite phased array of 3 × 9 slot elements are analyzed. The tradeoffs and design considerations of EBG structures are discussed to obtain optimum performance.

Waveguide End-Slot Phased Array Antenna Integrated with Electromagnetic Bandgap Structures

A combined modal expansion and moment method is applied for analyzing finite planar arrays of rectangular waveguides in an infinite ground plane including reactively loaded waveguide elements. The analysis, which is based on the moment method for solving the aperture problem, in combination with the modal analysis for the reactively loaded waveguide cavities or feeding waveguides, extends the network formulation of single apertures to multiple waveguide arrays including reactively loaded elements. Two orthogonally polarized sets of basic functions are utilized to model the expansion into the complete set of eigenmodes is used to formulate the waveguide cavity problem. The theory is applied to a finite planar array of arbitrarily spaced rectangular waveguides, where reactive loads are realized by placing sliding electrical conductors at specified distances in each of the unfed waveguides. Numerical design examples show that beamforming, beamsteering, and the improvement of the crosspolarization behavior is possible by a suitable choice of the geometrical parameters. The theory is verified by results available from the literature as well as newly performed experimental measurements. >

Generalized moment method analysis of planar reactively loaded rectangular waveguide arrays

A method of moments formulation for small finite planar phased arrays of rectangular waveguides in an infinite ground plane is investigated. Piecewise sinusoidal-uniform surface patches are used as the basis and testing functions for the unknown equivalent magnetic currents of each aperture. The block-Toeplitz symmetry property for rectangular grid arrays is utilized in the solution of the system of equations. Data are presented for 11 \times 11 arrays with various element sizes, element spacings, and scan angles. Good agreement with data in the literature is shown. The analysis is particularly efficient for E - plane and H -plane scans for arrays having rectangular waveguide-fed apertures excited by the dominant mode.
