The paper presented a brief state-of-the-art concerning PORBASE The National Union Catalogue on Line strengthening the importance of cooperation with special libraries, like the medical libraries. The concept and the role of a "national union catalogue" has been analysed under the framework of the Information Society and with special emphasis on two important items: the explosion in electronic publishing anf the Information superhighways. As a result, different network architectures or scenarios which may be used for the union catalogue were presented, briefly discussing the implications for the future of PORBASE.

Health Information Management: What Strategies?

Using the paired comparison technique, each of 340 library patrons evaluated two versions of a single bibliographic record displayed on an ADDS Regent CRT. One display represented the standard, Library of Congress (LC) format, the other represented one of 15 variations in format of the same title. Both the sequence and selection of the two displays were randomized. The reaction time of the patrons to locating selected bibliographic elements and their ratings of the displays with respect to (a) readability, (b) logical arrangement of data, (c) pleasibility, and (d) overall preference were analyzed. Overall preference for a display was positively correlated with response time (rs = 0.67) for locating a specific field within the record. Analysis of variance indicated that preferences were primarily influenced by the spatial arrangement of the displays with both the side heading label and underlining being preferred over the LC forms. Generally, the patrons preferred the use of a combination of upper and lower case letters to the exclusive use of lower case letters only. Differences between upper and lower case letter combinations and upper case only letters were not statistically significant for all criterion variables. No statistical significance existed regarding black characters on a white background or the reverse situation.

The central library of Boehringer Mannheim (BM), a research-based pharmaceutical company in Germany with sites at Mannheim, Tutzing and Penzberg (Upper Bavaria), provides its services for some 6.500 employees engaged in therapeutics, diagnostics and biochemicals at the Mannheim site. Besides the library three information departments (Medical Information, Chemical-pharmaceutical Information and Diagnostics-related Information) ensure comprehensive supply of information in Mannheim, while the central library’s task is to supply the original literature.

Contents Tables of Biomedical Journals via E-Mail

For some months the central library of Boehringer Mannheim GmbH, a research‐based pharmaceutical company in Germany, has been disseminating tables of contents in electronic form. These electronic tables of contents are generated from the current scientific journal literature. At present the library supplies contents pages of roughly 440 journals to 240 internal clients. This service has been designed as a means of rapid distribution of individually tailored information from the topical scientific literature. The tables of contents are delivered to the clients' electronic mailboxes via the electronic mail system. We describe the situation before the introduction of this service, the motives for switching to this service, and the librarian and technical work necessary in the preliminary stages. Moreover, the paper shows the realisation of the project, the problems occurring during the phase of introduction and the acceptance by the users.

Individually tailored tables of contents via BM‐SwetScan on the Boehringer Mannheim network

The effect of contents page format on the efficiency and ease of scanning by 54 medical scientists, was tested using 14 different format patterns. Significant differences were found between formats with respect to speed of scanning, rate of missed key words, and subjective appeal to the reader. These three criteria were not necessarily related, but some formats were better than others in all three. The results seem to indicate that when the material directly related to the immediate purpose of the scanner is separated from unrelated material, such as in a separate column, and when the unrelated material is more concentrated spatially, efficiency of scanning is increased. Study of newly devised formats may lead to an optimal one with considerable gain in total scanning time and rate of key words located, as well as reduction in fatigue.
