X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometry: Current Status and Prospects of Development

Chondrites are the most frequently studied extraterrestrial material. We present new data on the concentrations of 43 major and trace elements found in the Uhrovec, Veľke Borove (Nagy-Borove), Rumanova, Kosice and Chelyabinsk meteorites, which were analyzed using INAA. The results are in good agreement with the mean data for an average ordinary chondrite of the respective class; normalization of the values to CI chondrites also showed similar outcome. Additionally, for the Rumanova, Kosice and Chelyabinsk meteorites, INAA results of the bulk chemical composition are reasonably consistent with the data obtained by the same and/or different methods published earlier.

Determination of elemental content in the Rumanová, Uhrovec, Veľké Borové, Košice and Chelyabinsk chondrites by instrumental neutron activation analysis

This paper presents a mineralogical analysis of various chondrule types and chemical analysis of olivine in different parts of meteorite Jesenice. Quantitative energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy with a scanning electron microscope was used in the analyses. The results showed that the chemical composition of the olivine was homogeneous throughout the meteorite with an average olivine composition of Fa 26.4 ± 0.6. The results of this study were in agreement with previous study of the meteorite, which showed that the meteorite Jesenice was an equilibrated L chondrite.

Structure of the chondrules and the chemical composition of olivine in meteorite Jesenice

This review covers characteristics and potential applications of various versions of the X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometry for analyzing both liquid and solid samples. Particular emphasis is given to research published within the past decade, as information on XRF’s previous applications can be found in earlier reviews and monographs. The results of experiments on determining fundamental atomic parameters, such as mass absorption coefficients, fluorescence yields, transition probabilities for the emission of specific lines of elements, and nonradiative transition probabilities. Additionally, the review addresses the capabilities of newly designed models of XRF spectrometers developed in recent years. The application of total reflection X-ray fluorescence spectrometry for diverse samples is examined in greater detail. Furthermore, the document presents data on the utilization of XRF in investigating nanoparticles of some typical materials. These particles exhibit qualitatively novel properties and have become a focal point of nanotechnology, an area rapidly developing in the last few decades. 

The chondrite meteorite that exploded above the city of Jesenice in north-west Slovenia on April 2009, and was partly recovered during the subsequent summer months, was investigated by the in-air method of proton-induced X-rays and gamma rays (PIXE-PIGE) and by microbeam mapping in a vacuum. The chondrules composed of olivine/pyroxene and pyroxenes were identified and the composition of the minerals determined. Different pyroxene types were found in the chondrule core and in the enveloping material. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
