Many methods based on spectrophotometric, fluorometric, piezoresistive, amperometric or conductive measurements have been proposed for detecting the concentration of formaldehyde in air. However, conventional formaldehyde measurement systems are bulky and expensive and require the services of highly-trained operators. Accordingly, the emergence of sophisticated technologies in recent years has prompted the development of many microscale gaseous formaldehyde detection systems. Besides their compact size, such devices have many other advantages over their macroscale counterparts, including a real-time response, a more straightforward operation, lower power consumption, and the potential for low-cost batch production. This paper commences by providing a high level overview of the formaldehyde gas sensing field and then describes some of the more significant real-time sensors presented in the literature over the past 10 years or so.

Analytical applications of peroxyoxalate chemiluminescence

A novel electrochemical sensor for the determination of formaldehyde is introduced based on electrodepositing nanostructured platinum–palladium alloy in Nafion film-coated glassy carbon electrode. Bimetallic Pt–Pd nanoparticles are found to be uniformly dispersed in Nafion film, as confirmed by scanning electron microscopic analysis. Energy dispersed X-ray analysis is used to characterize the composition of metal present in the nanoparticle-modified electrodes. The electrocatalytical behavior of the electrode is investigated by cyclic voltammetry and linear sweep voltammetry. Experimental results show that the electrode displays a remarked electrocatalytic activity for the oxidation of formaldehyde and exhibits a linear relationship in the range of 10 μM to 1 mM, with a detection limit of 3 μM in acidic solution. The low detection limit, wide linear range, and high sensitivity of the sensor make it valuable for further application.

Electrochemical sensor for formaldehyde based on Pt–Pd nanoparticles and a Nafion-modified glassy carbon electrode

Mesoporous silica materials have a potential application for enzyme immobilization, which increases the stability of enzymes. We report the development of a novel detection method based on biosensors comprising an immobilized enzyme in mesoporous silica materials (i.e., FSM8.0 or P123-M), an electrochemical mediator (i.e., quinone), and an electrochemical cell, using the enzyme formaldehyde dehydrogenase. These biosensors exhibit a rapid response and high sensitivity, and they can detect 1.2 μM of formaldehyde in an aqueous solution (corresponding to sub-ppb atmospheric concentration of formaldehyde). Furthermore, the sensors exhibit high selectivity, reusability, and a remarkable storage stability (stable over 80 days), indicating that formaldehyde dehydrogenase retains its highly ordered structure in these mesoporous silica materials. These results indicate that mesoporous silica materials can provide favorable methods for enzyme immobilization on the electrode and they are useful for developing high-performance electrochemical biosensors.

Electrochemical biosensor for the detection of formaldehyde based on enzyme immobilization in mesoporous silica materials

Gaseous formaldehyde (FA), a common indoor pollutant, presents a serious threat to human health. As an efficient tool for FA detection, fluorescent probes exhibit the advantages of low cost, ease of use, facile operation, etc. However, previously developed FA fluorescent probes are mostly based on fluorophores with aggregation-caused quenching features and thus require dispersion in solvent to detect FA. In this study, a fluorescent probe (TPE-FA) based on an aggregation-induced emission (AIE) fluorophore (tetraphenylethylene) has been developed for facile detection of gaseous FA through a fluorescence “turn-on” response. TPE-FA reacts with FA through 2-aza-Cope sigmatropic rearrangement. Based on the AIE features of TPE-FA, we fabricated a portable solid sensor, FA test plate, by directly loading TPE-FA on high performance thin-layer chromatography silica gel plate.
