Over the last decades computer based tools have been introduced to facilitate systems engineering processes. There are computer based tools for assisting engineers in virtually every aspect of the systems engineering process from requirement elicitation and analysis, over functional analysis, synthesis, implementation and verification. It is not uncommon for a tool to provide many services covering more than one aspect of systems engineering. There exist numerous situations where information exchanges across tool boundaries are valuable, e.g., exchange of specifications between organisations using heterogeneous tool sets, exchange of specifications from legacy to modern tools, exchange of pecifications to tools that provide more advanced modelling or analysis capabilities than the originating tool or storage of specification data in a neutral format such that multiple tools can operate on the data. The focus in this thesis is on the analysis, design and implementation of a method and tool neutral information model for enabling systems engineering tool data exchange. The information model includes support for representation of requirements, system functional architecture and physical architecture, and verification and validation data. There is also support for definition of multiple system viewpoints, representation of system architecture, traceability information and version and configuration management. The applicability of the information model for data exchange hasbeen validated through implementation of tool interfaces to COTS and proprietary systems engineering tools, and exchange of real specifications in different scenarios. The results obtained from the validation activities indicate that systems engineering tool data exchange may decrease the time spent for exchanging specifications between partners developing complex systems and that the information model approach described in the thesis is a compelling alternative to tool specific interfaces.

Software engineering and Petri net theory are disciplines of different nature. Research on software engineering focuses on a problem domain, i.e., the development of complex software systems, and tries to find a coherent set of solutions to cope with the different aspects of the problem, while research on Petri nets investigates applications and properties of a specific model (Petri nets).

Petri Nets and Software Engineering

Traditional techniques for designing the software of complex real-time control systems offer limited support for validating design before producing final code. The need of early validation of the design of control software is increasing, due to the growing complexity of the software components. This is especially the case of advanced robot controllers, due to the strict timing requirements of run time elaboration of information from exteroceptive sensors. The use of formal methods can increase the possibility of validating the design. This paper presents an approach for designing software for robotic controllers based on the use of a specialized notation formally defined by means of Petri nets (CONTROL NETS). The proposed notation is easy to use in the specific domain and it benefits from the validation techniques available for Petri nets. Benefits of CONTROL NETS, with respect to a traditional approach based on structured analysis techniques, are assessed through a case study.

A technique for designing robotic control systems based on Petri nets

The article proposes an approach for defining extensible and flexible formal interpreters for diagram notations with significant dynamic semantics. More precisely, it addresses semi-formal diagram notations that have precisely-defined syntax, but informally defined (dynamic) semantics. These notations are often flexible to fit the different needs and expectations of users. Flexibility comes from the incompleteness or informality of the original definition and results in different interpretations.The approach defines interpreters by means of a mapping onto a semantic domain. Two sets of rules define the correspondences between the elements of the diagram notation and those of the semantic domain, and between events and states of the semantic domain and visual annotations on the elements of the diagram notation.Flexibility also leads to notation families, that is, sets of notations that share core concepts, but present slightly different interpretations. Existing approaches usually interpret these notations in isolation; the approach presented in this article allows the interpretation of a family as a whole. The feasibility of the approach is demonstrated through a prototype generator that allows users to implement special-purpose interpreters by defining relatively small sets of rules.

Petri net extensions for the development of MIMO net models of automated manufacturing systems

A graphics-based language known as ESML (extended systems modeling language), which is an extension of the data flow diagram notation for representing control logic in models of real-time systems, is analyzed and summarized to provide a rigorous interpretation of ESML symbols and their combinations. Based on elementary and compact (high-level) Petri nets (PNs), to which a succinct introduction is given, formal foundations for ESML, and in particular for its transformation schema (TS) notation, are proposed. Translation principles as well as examples of usual transformation and flow patterns are presented both in TS and PN notation. The resulting PN models are rigorous and accurate models of the dynamics of real-time systems with signals, prompts, and data flows of various kinds.
