Enhancement on thermal, elastic and optical properties of new formulation tellurite glasses: Influence of ZnO as a glass modifier

This study presents an in-depth analysis of the physical, optical, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and radiation shielding properties of vanadium-doped cadmium lead borate tellurite glasses, coded as PCTBVX. A series of glasses with varying concentrations of vanadium oxide (V2O5) were synthesized and characterized to understand their structural and functional capabilities. The physical properties, determined through density and molar volume measurements, revealed a notable decrease in density and an increase in molar volume with increasing V2O5 content. This trend was attributed to the substitution of denser CdO with lighter V2O5, and the transformation of BO4 tetrahedra into BO3 triangles in the glass network. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis provided insights into the crystalline structures, indicating distinct patterns for each glass composition. Optical properties were investigated using UV–Visible spectroscopy and Tauc plots, revealing a nonlinear decrease in optical band gap energies as V2O5 concentration increased. This observation suggested alterations in the boro-tellurite network structure due to V2O5 addition. EPR spectroscopy was employed to examine the local structures around V4+ ions, demonstrating a correlation between V2O5 concentration and EPR signal strength, indicative of the vanadium ions' coordination environment. The study's highlight was the comprehensive evaluation of radiation shielding properties using Monte Carlo N-Particle Transport Code (MCNP5) simulations and Phy-X/PSD software. These analyses showcased the glasses' capabilities in gamma and neutron attenuation, with a focus on parameters such as attenuation coefficients, effective atomic numbers, and removal cross-sections. The findings revealed that increasing vanadium concentration enhanced the glasses' shielding effectiveness against both gamma and neutron radiation. Overall, the synthesized PCTBVX glasses demonstrated promising attributes for applications in radiation shielding and optical technologies, owing to their modified density, structural alterations, and improved functional properties brought about by vanadium doping. This research not only contributes to the understanding of vanadium's role in glass matrices but also paves the way for developing advanced materials for protective and optical applications.

Samples of bismuth borate glasses were prepared by the melt-quenching method, following the molar ratio formula [(58.4–2x) mol% B2O3 + (18.8 + x) mol% ZnO + (18.8 + x) mol% CaO + 4 mol% Bi2O3)], where x = 0, 2, 4, 6, and 8 and equal concentrations of zinc oxide and calcium oxide were incorporated into the glass matrix. The structural analysis of the prepared materials was characterized using X-ray diffraction measurements, where each sample showed highly homogenous glassy nature. Deconvolution of X-ray diffraction data was employed to separate unresolved bands, and results manifested the existence of two micro-nucleating agents at 2θ values about 30° and 50°. Optical and optoelectronic properties of the present glasses were assessed using the UV optical absorption. Introducing both zinc and calcium oxides increased the glass transparency for electromagnetic radiation in the UV region. Additionally, values of Fermi energy, Urbach energy, optical conductivity, and the linear refractive index were decreased by the incorporation of both zinc and calcium oxides, while the quality factor was increased. Our results suggest the studied materials for optical filtering, optical switching, and optoelectronic device applications.

Optical and structural studies of some zinc calcium borate glasses for optoelectronic device applications

The fast quenching technique has been used to prepare some mixed-alkali-lead borovanadate glasses doped with different amounts of Ce2O3 (in grams). The structural, optical, and shielding properties of the prepared samples have been characterized based on the X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetric, UV–vis, and gamma ray measurements. The amorphous nature of all prepared samples was confirmed by the X-ray patterns and differential scanning calorimetric thermograms, which both showed only broad humps, a single glass transition temperature, and two crystallization points for every sample. The glass's transition temperature, micro-hardness, and optical gaps decreased when the Ce2O3 content increased, while the glass's thermal stability, bulk density, poisson's ratio, linear susceptibility, nonlinear susceptibility, optical conductivity, electric conductivity, and relaxation time all increased. It is found that the gamma photon and fast neutron shielding properties of borovanadate glass are altered by the addition of Ce2O3. Where the increase in Ce2O3 content caused a slight increase in the value of the mass attenuation coefficient and a reduction in the MFP value. Finally, the presence of Ce2O3 improves the glass's capacity to absorb fast neutrons.
