High temperature (HT) polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) – A review

The development of high-temperature PEM fuel cells (working at 150–200 °C) is pursued worldwide in order to solve some of the problems of current cells based on Nafion® (CO tolerance, improved kinetics, water management, etc.). Polybenzimidazole membranes nanoimpregnated with phosphoric acid have been studied as electrolytes in PEMFCs for more than a decade. Commercially available polybenzimidazole (PBI) has been the most extensively studied and used for this application in membranes doped with all sorts of strong inorganic acids. In addition to this well-known polymer we also review here studies on ABPBI and other polybenzimidazole type membranes. More recently, several copolymers and related derivatives have attracted many researchers' attention, adding variety to the field. Furthermore, besides phosphoric acid, many other strong inorganic acids, as well as alkaline electrolytes have been used to impregnate benzimidazole membranes and are analyzed here. Finally, we also review different hybrid materials based on polybenzimidazoles and several inorganic proton conductors such as heteropoly acids, as well as sulfonated derivatives of the polymers, all of which contribute to a quickly-developing field with many blooming results and useful potential which are the subject of this critical review (317 references).

The scientific community is focused on the development of inexpensive and high-performing membrane materials for proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells (FCs). The major approach to reducing the cost of FCs, which is crucial for the widespread acceptance of FCs as energy sources for various practical applications, is reducing the cost of the membrane. Efforts are being made in the development of advanced polymeric materials, which will satisfy the technical and economic demands of the consumers. Because most alternative membranes are outperformed by Nafion membranes over an entire set of important properties, it may be worthwhile to compromise on certain parameters to develop alternative specialized membranes. This review presents the properties (mainly conductivity and chemical and mechanical stability) of modern solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) for PEM FCs.

Review of Advanced Materials for Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells

High temperature PEMFCs based on phosphoric acid-doped ABPBI membranes have been prepared and characterised. At 160 °C and ambient pressure fuel cell power densities of 300 mW cm–2 (with hydrogen and air as reactants) and 180 mW cm–2 (with simulated diesel reformate/air) have been achieved. The durability of these membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) in the hydrogen/air mode of operation at different working conditions has been measured electrochemically and has been correlated to the cell resistivity, the phosphoric acid loss rate and the catalyst particle size. Under stationary conditions, a voltage loss of only –25 μV h–1 at a current density of 200 mA cm–2 has been deduced from a 1,000 h test. Under dynamic load changes or during start–stop cycling the degradation rate was significantly higher. Leaching of phosphoric acid from the cell was found to be very small and is not the main reason for the performance loss. Instead an important increase in the catalyst particle size was observed to occur during two long-term experiments. At high gas flows of hydrogen and air ABPBI-based MEAs can be operated at temperatures below 100 °C for several hours without a significant irreversible loss of cell performance and with only very little acid leaching.
