This review highlights various aspects of current palladium membrane research and serves as a comprehensive bibliography covering palladium membrane preparation methods and applications. There are many promising uses for palladium membranes, although widespread use of the available technologies is constrained primarily by the high cost of palladium, lack of durability due to hydrogen embrittlement, and susceptibility to fouling. Various researchers in the field are tackling these problems and fabricating thinner palladium alloy composite membranes that better withstand contaminantion and thermal cycling. What has been accomplished to address these issues and the directions presently being explored are discussed.

Preparation and characterization of Pd-Cu composite membranes for hydrogen separation

Nanostructured palladium–iron membranes for hydrogen separation and membrane hydrogenation reactions

High flux palladium–copper composite membranes for hydrogen separations

Dense Pd/SS-316L composite membranes were prepared using conventional electroless plating and a new synthesis procedure based on electroless plating with osmosis. Membranes from the new synthesis technique have about five times higher hydrogen permeation rate and exhibit better thermal stability. Ethane dehydrogenation reaction was conducted in a packed bed membrane reactor (PBMR) with Pd/SS-316L membrane and Pt-Sn/alumina catalyst pellets. Supra-equilibrium conversions were obtained with a better than 95 % selectivity towards ethylene. The effect of non-uniform distribution of catalyst in pellets was also investigated.

Investigation of the influence of the reactor configuration and the use of coupled reactions to remove hydrogen from the reaction zone and drive up the overall yield from the dehydrogenation reaction; specifically the dehydrogenation of cyclohexane to benzene over a 3.5% RhMo/Al 2 O 3 catalyst placed on the top side of a palladium membrane. Flow distributions within the reactor are investigated. The coupled hydrogenation of ethylene with the dehydrogenation of cyclohexane allow to assess the difference between reaction assisted transport through a membrane and purely mass transfer driver transport
