The precursor phases of ${\mathrm{SrFeO}}_{3\ensuremath{-}x}$ (SFO) and ${\mathrm{SrMoO}}_{4}$ (SMO) were used to prepare ${\mathrm{Sr}}_{2}{\mathrm{FeMoO}}_{6}$ with different ratios by a solid-state reaction technique. An x-ray diffractometer was used to identify the phases. SMO was observed to exist in the Mo-rich samples. The high resolution of a transmission electron microscope was employed to identify the compositions and phases. It was further evidenced that Mo-rich nanosized clusters were located inside the grains rather than at grain boundaries. Moreover, the antiphase boundary (APB) was clearly evidenced in the Mo-rich SFMO, which might lead to the Sr- or Fe-rich boundaries. The conduction, magnetic, and magnetotransport properties were characterized, and it was found that the Mo-rich samples had higher resistivity, lower saturated magnetization, and lower coercivity but higher low-field magnetoresistance (LFMR), which was strongly related to the presence of the excess Mo ions and APBs inside the grains. The conduction of SFMO samples with different ratios reveals a semiconductor behavior, which can be described by the VRH model, Eq. (1), with $p=\frac{1}{4}$ and ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{o}$ independent of temperature in the temperature range of 50 to 300 K. The evaluated values of ${T}_{o}$ increase with the decrease of the SFO/SMO ratio, which are considered to be influenced by the residual SMO and APBs inside the grains. It is suggested that the enhancement of LFMR of Mo-rich SFMO is arisen from the APBs or the induced Sr- or Fe-rich grain boundaries.

Reassessment of the role of antiphase boundaries in the low-field magnetoresistance of Sr 2 FeMoO 6

Oxygen vacancies can be of utmost importance for improving or deteriorating physical properties of oxide materials. Here, we studied from first-principles the electronic and magnetic properties of oxygen vacancies in the double perovskite Sr2FeMoO6 (SFMO). We show that oxygen vacancies can increase the Curie temperature in SFMO, although the total magnetic moment is reduced at the same time. We found also that the experimentally observed valence change of the Fe ions from 3+  to 2+  in the x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements is better explained by oxygen vacancies than by the assumed mixed valence state. The agreement of the calculated x-ray absorption spectra and XMCD results with experimental data is considerably improved by inclusion of oxygen vacancies.

Structural and magnetic properties of Ba2(B,Re)2O6 (B = Fe, Mn, Co and Ni) double-perovskite oxides have been investigated. Rietveld analysis shows that all our synthesized samples are single phase and crystallize at room temperature in the cubic double-perovskite structure with Fm3m space group. Magnetization measurements versus temperature and versus magnetic applied field up to 5 T show that Ba2(Fe,Re)2O6, Ba2(Mn,Re)2O6 and Ba2(Ni,Re)2O6 are ferromagnetic at low temperature with TC = 318 K, 113 K and 32 K respectively while Ba2(Co,Re)2O6 is antiferromagnetic below TN = 25 K. Different ratios of the precursor phases of SrFeO 3-x (SFO) and SrMoO 4 (SMO) were used to prepare Sr 2 FeMoO 6 (SFMO) by a solid-state reaction. X-ray diffraction was used to identify the phases. A residual SMO was observed to exist in the sample with an SFO/SMO ratio of 0.9:1. The sample with a residual SMO phase had higher resistivity, lower magnetization, but higher low-field magnetoresistance (LFMR). High-resolution transmission electron microscopy was used to identify the compositions and phases. Nanometer-sized amorphous-like clusters of SMO phase were located inside the grains rather than at grain boundaries; however, some boundaries were rich in the strontium ion. The possible mechanisms for the conduction and the increase of LFMR of SFMO are discussed.
