This paper proposes an extension to the standard CORBA interfaces to support explicit binding. The extended interface enables a program to select a suitable transport protocol for each method invocation, and it provides a flexible and versatile framework to control various transport protocols. The interface is compatible with the object model of CORBA, and it is carefully designed to take into account the portability of an application to other CORBA implementations. The extended interface has implemented in omniORB2, which is a CORBA 2.0 compliant system that has been developing at AT&T Laboratories, Cambridge.

Practical explicit binding interface for supporting multiple transport protocols in a CORBA system

How control-friendly is a computing system? And how control-friendly could it be?

OMG's (Object Management Group) CORBA (Common Object Request Broker Architecture) is becoming a common platform for distributed computing environment. However, it is yet to address CSCW (Computer Supported Collaborative Work) ftamework. This paper addresses the problem of building a framework for CSCW and proposes a new CSCW framework based on CORBA (CFC). CFC includes session, participant, mode, directory, stream, media and resource management. A desktop conference system and DSM-CC compliant video-on-demand system were built to demonstrate the usefulness of the framework. The performance of CORBA based CSCW applications is given. The strengths and weaknesses of using a CORBA framework are also discussed.

An implementation of a CSCW framework using CORBA

In this paper a multi-user motion capture system is presented, where users work from separate locations and interact in a common virtual environment. The system functions well on low-end personal computers; it implements a natural human/machine interaction due to the complete absence of markers and weak constraints on users' clothes and environment lighting. It is suitable for every-day use, where the great precision reached by complex commercial systems is not the principal requisite.

Distributed collaborative environment with real-time tracking of 3D body postures

Continuous media, such as audio and video, are quickly becoming an integral part of distributed computing environments. A shortcoming of such environments is their lack of support for continuous flows of information. What is missing is the notion of an on-going communication activity with an associated quality of service. This paper describes a model for integrating multimedia flows into a distributed computing system. The model permits explicit bindings to be established between type-checked stream interfaces. The stream binding is represented in the computational model as a first-class object which encapsulates configuration rules and QoS attributes. An operational interface supplied by the binding object allows other objects within the system to manage the binding, to renegotiate QoS parameters, to control the flows across the binding, and to register interest in stream events such as flow reports and communication errors. The in-band stream interface is an abstract C++ wrapper around transport mechanisms that include intra-host IPC and network transport protocols such as TCP and XTP. A prototype implementation of this model is described using the Common Object Request Broker Architecture. The implementation environment comprises a local area ATM network with directly attached multimedia peripherals and general purpose workstations.
