In 1997, Azuma published a survey on augmented reality (AR). Our goal is to complement, rather than replace, the original survey by presenting representative examples of the new advances. We refer one to the original survey for descriptions of potential applications (such as medical visualization, maintenance and repair of complex equipment, annotation, and path planning); summaries of AR system characteristics (such as the advantages and disadvantages of optical and video approaches to blending virtual and real, problems in display focus and contrast, and system portability); and an introduction to the crucial problem of registration, including sources of registration error and error-reduction strategies.

Recent advances in augmented reality

In this paper, a quaternion based extended Kalman filter (EKF) is developed for determining the orientation of a rigid body from the outputs of a sensor which is configured as the integration of a tri-axis gyro and an aiding system mechanized using a tri-axis accelerometer and a tri-axis magnetometer. The suggested applications are for studies in the field of human movement. In the proposed EKF, the quaternion associated with the body rotation is included in the state vector together with the bias of the aiding system sensors. Moreover, in addition to the in-line procedure of sensor bias compensation, the measurement noise covariance matrix is adapted, to guard against the effects which body motion and temporary magnetic disturbance may have on the reliability of measurements of gravity and earth's magnetic field, respectively. By computer simulations and experimental validation with human hand orientation motion signals, improvements in the accuracy of orientation estimates are demonstrated for the proposed EKF, as compared with filter implementations where either the in-line calibration procedure, the adaptive mechanism for weighting the measurements of the aiding system sensors, or both are not implemented.

Quaternion-based extended Kalman filter for determining orientation by inertial and magnetic sensing

This paper presents a model-based hybrid tracking system for outdoor augmented reality in urban environments enabling accurate, realtime overlays for a handheld device. The system combines several well-known approaches to provide a robust experience that surpasses each of the individual components alone: an edge-based tracker for accurate localisation, gyroscope measurements to deal with fast motions, measurements of gravity and magnetic field to avoid drift, and a back store of reference frames with online frame selection to re-initialize automatically after dynamic occlusions or failures. A novel edge-based tracker dispenses with the conventional edge model, and uses instead a coarse, but textured, 3D model. This yields several advantages: scale-based detail culling is automatic, appearance-based edge signatures can be used to improve matching and the models needed are more commonly available. The accuracy and robustness of the resulting system is demonstrated with comparisons to map-based ground truth data.

Going out: robust model-based tracking for outdoor augmented reality

A basic requirement in virtual environments is the tracking of objects, especially humans. A real time motion-tracking system was presented and evaluated in this paper. System sensors were built using tri-axis microelectromechanical accelerometers, rate gyros, and magnetometers. A Kalman-based fusion algorithm was applied to obtain dynamic orientations and further positions of segments of the subject's body. The system with the proposed algorithm was evaluated via dynamically measuring Euler orientation and comparing with other two conventional methods. An arm motion experiment was demonstrated using the developed system and algorithm. The results validated the effectiveness of the proposed method.

A real-time articulated human motion tracking using tri-axis inertial/magnetic sensors package

We describe an ad-hoc localization system for sensor networks and explain why traditional calibration methods are inadequate for this system. Building upon previous work, we frame calibration as a parameter estimation problem; we parameterize each device and choose the values of those parameters that optimize the overall system performance. This method reduces our average error from 74.6% without calibration to 10.1%. We propose ways to expand this technique to a method of autocalibration for localization as well as to other sensor network applications.

Calibration as parameter estimation in sensor networks

Almost all previous Augmented Reality (AR) systems work indoors. Outdoor AR systems offer the potential for new application areas. However, building an outdoor AR system is difficult due to portability constraints, the inability to modify the environment, and the greater range of operating conditions. We demonstrate a hybrid tracker that stabilizes an outdoor AR display with respect to user motion, achieving more accurate registration than previously shown in an outdoor AR system. The hybrid tracker combines rate gyros with a compass and tilt orientation sensor in a near real-time system. Sensor distortions and delays required compensation to achieve good results. The measurements from the two sensors are fused together to compensate for each other's limitations. From static locations with moderate head rotation rates, peak registration errors are /spl sim/2 degrees, with typical errors under 1 degree, although errors can become larger over long time periods due to compass drift. Without our stabilization, even small motions make the display nearly unreadable.

A motion-stabilized outdoor augmented reality system

Accurate registration in an augmented reality system requires accurate trackers. An electronic compass can be a valuable sensor in an outdoor augmented reality system because it provides absolute heading estimates. However, compasses are vulnerable to distortion caused by environmental disturbances to Earth's magnetic field. These disturbances vary with geographic location and are not trivial to model. Static calibration methods exist but these require an explicit initial calibration step and do not adapt to changing distortion patterns. This paper describes in detail an autocalibration method that compensates for changing compass distortions. With minimal user input, it automatically measures and adjusts the calibration table used to correct the compass output. Autocalibration uses redundant heading information computed from rate gyroscopes. We demonstrate that autocalibration converges to solutions similar to a distortion table that was manually measured with a mechanical turntable. With autocalibration, an electronic compass can provide useful measurements even as the user walks around through areas of varying magnetic distortion.
