We demonstrate a polarization-multiplexed, single-laser system for terahertz (THz) time-domain spectroscopy without an external delay line. The fiber laser emits two pulse trains with independently adjustable repetition rates, utilizing only one laser-active section and one pump diode. With a standard fiber-coupled THz setup and a polarization-multiplexed optical amplifier, we are able to measure transients with a spectral bandwidth of 1.5 THz and a dynamic range of 50 dB in a measurement time of 1 s. Based on the novel laser architecture, we call this new approach single-laser polarization-controlled optical sampling, or SLAPCOPS.

This paper presents a comparison between grayscale and color-based deep learning algorithms for long distance optical UAV detection using robotic telescope systems. Three deep learning object detection algorithms are trained with a custom dataset consisting of RGB images and the performance is evaluated against the same algorithms trained with the same dataset converted to grayscale. Network training from scratch and fine-tuning are evaluated. The results for all algorithms show that fine-tuning with RGB images maximizes the detection performance and scores about 5% better in terms of mean average precision (mAP(0.5)) compared to fine-tuning on grayscale images.

Based on the novel laser architecture, we call this new approach single-laser polarization-controlled optical sampling, or SLAPCOPS.

This paper presents the design and implementation of a scalable laser ranger finder (LRF)-based prototype system, which enables distance measurement and precise localization of multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in real-time. The system consists of a telescope and camera as the image acquisition components, supplemented by an LRF and a fast steering mirror (FSM) to obtain the distance measurement. By combining the optical path of the camera and the LRF through a dichroic mirror, the LRF is accurately aligned by the FSM based on the angular position of a UAV within the camera field of view. The implemented prototype successfully demonstrates distance measurements of up to four UAVs with a bandwidth of 14 Hz per object.

Two pulse trains with adjustable repetition rate difference are simultaneously emitted from a single, all-polarization-maintaining, gain-coupled, fiber laser. This design shows great potential to reduce the complexity of current time-resolved measurement systems without sacrificing performance.
