The production of a highly polarized positron beam via nonlinear Breit-Wheeler processes during the interaction of an ultraintense circularly polarized laser pulse with a longitudinally spin-polarized ultrarelativistic electron beam is investigated theoretically. A new Monte Carlo method employing fully spin-resolved quantum probabilities is developed under the local constant field approximation to include three-dimensional polarization effects in strong laser fields. The produced positrons are longitudinally polarized through polarization transferred from the polarized electrons by the medium of high-energy photons. The polarization transfer efficiency can approach 100% for the energetic positrons moving at smaller deflection angles. This method simplifies the postselection procedure to generate high-quality positron beams in further applications. In a feasible scenario, a highly polarized (40%--65%), intense (${10}^{5}--{10}^{6}$/bunch), collimated (5--70 mrad) positron beam can be obtained in a femtosecond timescale. The longitudinally polarized positron sources are desirable for applications in high-energy physics and material science.

Production of Highly Polarized Positron Beams via Helicity Transfer from Polarized Electrons in a Strong Laser Field.

Monte Carlo Simulation in the Radiological Sciences

The interaction of an unpolarized electron beam with a counterpropagating ultraintense linearly polarized laser pulse is investigated in the quantum radiation-dominated regime. We employ a semiclassical Monte Carlo method to describe spin-resolved electron dynamics, photon emissions and polarization, and pair production. Abundant high-energy linearly polarized gamma photons are generated intermediately during this interaction via nonlinear Compton scattering, with an average polarization degree of more than 50%, which further interacting with the laser fields produce electron-positron pairs due to nonlinear Breit-Wheeler process. The photon polarization is shown to significantly affect the pair yield by a factor beyond 10%. The considered signature of the photon polarization in the pair's yield can be experimentally identified in a prospective two-stage setup. Moreover, the signature can serve also for the polarimetry of high-energy high-flux gamma photons with a resolution well below 1% with currently achievable laser facilities.

High-energy gamma-photon polarization in nonlinear Breit-Wheeler pair production and gamma-polarimetry

The process of photon emission by a high-energy electron or positron moving in a bent single crystal with a constant curvature is considered. The relations for differential energy losses of particles and polarization of emitted photons are obtained. Corrections due to multiphoton production are found. The comparison of calculations with existing experimental data is carried out. The process of photoproduction of electron-positron pairs in a bent single crystal is also studied. The differential probabilities of the process taking into account the photon polarization are presented. Equations are obtained which determine the variation of the Stokes parameters of $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ quanta, and their solutions are given.

Photon emission and electron-positron photoproduction processes in the planar field of a bent single crystal

In the present paper, we investigate coherent bremsstrahlung of high energy electrons moving in a periodically deformed single crystal with a complex base. The formula for corresponding differential cross-section is derived for an arbitrary deformation field. The conditions are discussed under which the influence of the deformation is important. The case is considered in detail when the electron enters into the crystal at small angles with respect to a crystallographic axis. It is shown that in dependence of the parameters, the presence of the deformation can either enhance or reduce the bremsstrahlung cross-section.

Coherent Bremsstrahlung in Periodically Deformed Crystals with a Complex Base

The processes of coherent bremsstrahlung (CB) and coherent pair production (CPP) based on aligned crystal targets have been studied in the energy range 20-170 GeV. The experimental arrangement allowed for measurements of single photon properties of these phenomena including their polarization dependences. This is significant as the theoretical description of CB and CPP is an area of active debate and development. With the approach used in this paper, both the measured cross sections and polarization observables are predicted very well. This indicates a proper understanding of CB and CPP up to energies of 170 GeV. Birefringence in CPP on aligned crystals is applied to determine the polarization parameters in our measurements. New technologies for high-energy photon beam optics including phase plates and polarimeters for linear and circular polarization are demonstrated in this experiment. Coherent bremsstrahlung for the strings-on-strings (SOS) orientation yields a larger enhancement for hard photons than CB for the channeling orientations of the crystal. Our measurements and our calculations indicate low photon polarizations for the high-energy SOS photons.
