In the present study, a simple, fast, and economical method was introduced to eliminate methylene blue from dye wastewater water using a non-toxic, inexpensive, stable, and efficient adsorbent. The poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/starch hydrogel nanofiber membrane with high surface area and the three-dimensional structure was fabricated in water via electrospinning strategy, and the cross-linking reaction was done by thermal treatment. The characterization of the nanofibers was carried out using Fourier-transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR) and field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and the cross-linked PVA/starch nanofiber was applied as a membrane for the removal of methylene blue (MB). The recovery of MB was performed by methanol solution containing 5% (v/v) HCl. Langmuir isotherm model successfully described the adsorption of MB on nanosorbent, and the maximum adsorption capacity (qm) was 400 mg g−1. Also, the kinetic of adsorption was well fitted by the pseudo-second-order model. In this study, because of the high stability of fabricated membrane (based on the tensile testing), it can be used as a filter for the fast separation of MB (cationic dye) and methyl orange (MO, anionic dye).

The efficient removal of methylene blue from water samples using three-dimensional poly (vinyl alcohol)/starch nanofiber membrane as a green nanosorbent

A TiO2-based catalyst modified with highly condensed g-C3N4 has been synthesized though a simple vacuum calcination method and applied for the photocatalytic degradation of azo dye acid orange 7 (AO7). The obtained catalyst was thoroughly characterized by an array of analytical techniques, among which X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectra, and transmission electronic microscopy proved a successfully combination of the two composites. And elemental analysis revealed a C/N ratio close to the theoretical data of g-C3N4, indicating highly condensed g-C3N4 in the composited catalyst. The catalyst showed excellent photocatalytic activity toward degradation of AO7 under both visible and UV light, and in addition it had better photocatalytic performance than that of the catalyst prepared by calcination in air. The high photocatalytic activity could be attributed to two aspects: the suitable band gap positions for g-C3N4/TiO2 composite which could improve the separation efficiency of photo-generated electron–hole pairs and the high condensation degree of g-C3N4 resulting from the vacuum calcination which is advantageous for higher carrier mobility and lower HOMO levels.

Study on the photocatalytic reaction kinetics in a TiO2 nanoparticles coated microreactor integrated microfluidics device.

In this study, a baffled photocatalytic reactor was used for the treatment of colored wastewater containing the azo dye of Acid Orange 52 (AO52). A study on the active species of the photocatalytic process using TiO2 nanoparticles indicated that hydroxyl radical and superoxide have the greatest contribution to the dye degradation process respectively. Given that a level of biological oxygen demand/chemical oxygen demand (BOD5/COD) equal to 0.4 was achieved after about 5 hr from the beginning of the experiment, the reactor seems to be capable of purifying the wastewater containing AO52 dye after this time in order to discharge into a biological treatment system to continue the treatment process. The results of the liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) test showed that during the first 4 hr of the experiment, with the breakdown of the azo bond, the contaminant was decomposed into the benzene annular compounds with less toxicity indicating a reduction in the toxicity of wastewater after removing the dye agent. The study on the kinetics of these reactions followed the pseudo-first-order kinetic model in all conditions and corresponded well to Langmuir–Hinshelwood model. According to the kinetic model for the simultaneous occurrence of possible pathways, the kinetic constant of production and degradation of intermediate products in optimal conditions was estimated to be between 0.0029 and 0.0391 min− 1.

Kinetic study on photocatalytic degradation of Acid Orange 52 in a baffled reactor using TiO2 nanoparticles.

In this work, we report in situ studies of UV photoelectrocatalytic discoloration of a dye (indigo carmine) by a TiO2 thin film in a microreactor to demonstrate the driving force of the applied electrode potential and the dye flow rate toward dye discoloration kinetics. TiO2 65-nm-thick thin films were deposited by PVD magnetron sputtering technique on a conducting glass substrate of fluorinated tin oxide. A microreactor to measure the discoloration rate, the electrode potential, and the photocurrent in situ, was developed. The dye solutions, before and after measurements in the microreactor, were analyzed by Raman spectroscopy. The annealed TiO2 thin films had anatase structure with preferential orientation (101). The discoloration rate of the dye increased with the applied potential to TiO2 electrode. Further, acceleration of the photocatalytic reaction was achieved by utilizing dye flow recirculation to the microreactor. In both cases the photoelectrochemical/photocatalytic discoloration kinetics of the dye follows the Langmuir–Hinshelwood model, with first-order kinetics. The feasibility of dye discoloration on TiO2 thin film electrodes, prepared by magnetron sputtering using a flow microreactor system, has been clearly demonstrated. The discoloration rate is enhanced by applying a positive potential (E
 AP) and/or increasing the flow rate. The fastest discoloration and shortest irradiation time (50 min) produced 80% discoloration with an external anodic potential of 0.931 V and a flow rate of 12.2 mL min−1.
