Modification of surfaces with new excimer UV sources

This article presents experimental results on the effects of the O2 concentration on the removal efficiency of two exemplaric volatile organic compounds (VOCs): toluene (TOL) and trichloroethylene (TCE), with dielectric barrier discharges in dry Ar and N2. For both carrier gases, there is an optimal oxygen concentration of 0.3% for the removal efficiency, suggesting optimal utilization of oxygen radicals for VOC attack, rather than ozone production which has slow reaction rates with TOL and TCE. This is manifested by measurements of ozone concentrations in mixtures of Ar/O2/TCE as a function of the oxygen concentration, showing a minimum at maximal removal efficiencies. All results are discussed in terms of changes in the discharge behavior, radical formation, and chemical reaction pathways with changing O2 concentration in the carrier gas.

Effects of the O2 concentration on the removal efficiency of volatile organic compounds with dielectric barrier discharges in Ar and N2

In a known method for reducing particle emissions containing carbon of diesel motors, the exhaust gas emitted from the motor flows through a filter (21), whereby the particles contained in the exhaust gas are deposited on the filter surfaces and the deposited particles are oxidised, to regenerate the filter (212). According to the invention, the filter is regenerated by non-thermal, electric surface creeping discharge on the surfaces covered with particles. A system for carrying out the method is provided with a ceramic soot filter comprising means for oxidising the particles that have been deposited on the ceramic filter, said means for oxidising the soot particles supplying electric surface creeping discharges to the ceramic of the filter. In practice, the method can be combined with methods for the selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides. The systems that are required for carrying out the method guarantee the operational reliability and environmental compatibility of the high-voltage means for supplying the surface creeping discharges.

Electrical and optical properties of dielectric barrier Xenon discharge lamps, selectively emitting Xe 2 */172 nm vuv radiation from a multitude of transient discharge filaments have been investigated. The lamps used were uncooled and of the flat panel type with two dielectric quartz barriers and external metal electrodes. Such lamps can be considered as small scale models of much larger flat panel uv lamps. UV emission scales almost linearly with operating frequency below 10 kHz. Both uv emission and uv efficiency rise with increasing gap spacing. The specific 172 nm emission is in the range of 100 mW/cm 2 for frequencies close to 100 kHz (no lamp cooling). External efficiency at high specific uv emission is close to 10%. Higher external efficiencies up to 20% are possible at lower frequencies of a few kHz, but at reduced specific uv flux
