~i2l.though intelligent machines-robots- have made their appearance in certain applications, they have not e ntered the consumer marketplace. One of the reasons for this is the lack of the inexpensive sensor systems that would provide the robot with an image of the surrounding environment. This sensing faculty is a required capability for any autonomous entity. utilizing phased array technology is being developed for use in simple consumer robotic applications. The system c oncept was presented at tlie Twelfth Southeastern Symposium on System Theory. This paper discusses the functional components of the system and describes the testing procedure. The use of the sensing system in consumer robotics is explicated, and several r epresentative applications are illustrated.
