Microstrip Lines and Slotlines

A method for determining the accuracy of computed impedance and wavelength data for microstrip is proposed. It is shown that the standard equations of Wheeler and Schneider have rather large errors. Revised equations for microstrip impedance and wavelength are given both for analysis and synthesis with accuracy better than 1%. A simple, accurate equation for the microstrip open circuit is presented. Experimental data on microstrip T-junctions are compared with existing theories. A new accurate equation is given for the reference plane displacement in the stub arm. Corrections are proposed in the existing equations for the other parameters of the equivalent circuit.

Publisher Summary This chapter deals with the models currently used to improve the quasistatic approximation of microstrip structures. The chapter presents a brief review of the microstrip fundamentals; a comprehensive account of these dynamical models. A particular model based on the calculation of the electric surface currents in the structure is introduced in the chapter. The Green's functions involved are constructed and numerically evaluated using the exact formulation for dipole potentials in a stratified medium. New evaluation techniques developed for Sommerfeld integrals permit a very accurate computation of Green's functions. Their properties are then extensively discussed; the validity of the quasistatic approximations is checked and the importance of the surface wave is pointed out in detail. Finally, the integral equations for the currents are set up and solved by numerical methods in that also give several practical applications. The chapter concludes the model is that the surface currents on the antenna are directly determined and the near field can then be determined easily, that becomes most important when microstrip structures are utilized as radiators or biological applicators.

A Dynamical Radiation Model for Microstrip Structures

A theoretical approach for the representation of microstrip discontinuities by equivalent circuits with frequency-dependent parameters is presented. The model accounts accurately for the substrate presence and associated surface-wave effects, strip finite thickness, and radiation losses. The method can also be applied for the solution of microstrip components in the millimeter frequency range.

Frequency-Dependent Characteristics of Microstrip Discontinuities in Millimeter-Wave Integrated Circuits

The experimental characterization of some microstrip structures of common interest, including symmetrical T junctions, is described. Some results are compared with data derived from recent three-dimensiotial static theory and from the uniform plane-wave model. It is concluded that while the three-dimensional theory requires further improvement, it is generally in much better agreement with the measured data than the two-dimensional uniform plane-wave model.
