The Raman and mid-range infrared spectra have been measured on natural limestone and dolomite minerals. The carbonate minerals show four prominent absorption bands in the regions 1450–1420, 890–870, 720–700 and 1000–1100 cm−1. The positions of the wavenumbers are unique for each carbonate mineral and are thus diagnostic of their mineralogy. Calcite and dolomite groups are characterized by the Raman wavenumbers at 288 and 309 cm−1 and the infrared absorption bands at 712 and 728 cm−1, respectively. The principal wavenumber at 1092 cm−1 in the limestone spectra is accompanied by two satellites with values of 1062 and 1075 cm−1. The observed non-split peaks ν2 and ν4 in the infrared spectra of limestone indicate the presence of calcite structure in all these samples. The principal reflections occurring at the d-spacings, 3.03482, 1.91658 and 1.87962 A, confirm the presence of calcite structure in limestone minerals. The principal reflections occurring at the d-spacings, 3.037, 1.79179 and 2.19750 A, confirm the existence of dolomite structure in the dolomite minerals. The calculated lattice parameters for the limestone minerals are: a = 4.9781 A, c = 17.1188 A and V = 367.392(A)3 and the corresponding values for the dolomite minerals are: a = 4.8247 A, c = 15.9868 A and V = 322.28 (A)3. Minerals : Their Constitution and Origin

Visible-light-induced antibacterial activity of carbon-doped anatase-brookite titania nano-heterojunction photocatalysts are reported for the first time. These heterostructures were prepared using a novel low temperature (100 °C) nonhydrothermal low power microwave (300 W) assisted method. Formation of interband C 2p states was found to be responsible for the band gap narrowing of the carbon doped heterojunctions. The most active photocatalyst obtained after 60 min of microwave irradiation exhibits a 2-fold higher visible-light induced photocatalytic activity in contrast to the standard commercial photocatalyst Evonik-Degussa P-25. Staphylococcus aureus inactivation rate constant for carbon-doped nano-heterojunctions and the standard photocatalyst was 0.0023 and −0.0081 min–1, respectively. FT-Raman Spectroscopic Study of Calcium-Rich and Magnesium-Rich Carbonate Minerals

General lattice vibrational properties of minerals, particularly those properties which strongly influence the thermodynamic behavior, are discussed in this paper (the second of a series relating thermodynamic and lattice vibrational properties of minerals). Infrared (IR), Raman (R), and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) data are summarized, if known, for the following minerals: halite (INS), periclase (INS), corundum (IR, R), brucite (IR, R, partial INS), quartz (R, IR, INS), cristobalite (IR, R), silica glass (IR, R, partial INS), stishovite (IR), rutile (R, IR, INS), albite (IR, R), microcline (IR), spinel (IR, R), muscovite (IR, R), jadeite (IR), diopside (IR, R), enstatite (IR, R), olivine (IR, R), zircon (IR, R), kyanite (IR), andalusite (IR), sillimanite (IR), pyrope (IR), andradite (IR), grossular (IR), and calcite (IR, R, INS). New high-resolution infrared data are given for kyanite, andalusite, sillimanite, stishovite, coesite, jadeite, diopside, pyrope, andradite, and grossular. The data presented and summarized show that optic modes of vibration of silicates are spread over a range of frequencies, generally from wave numbers as low as 75 cm−1 to wave numbers as high as 1200 cm−1. The far-infrared (low frequency) optic modes are particularly important in this study because they strongly influence the low-temperature heat capacity and therefore the entropy. The mid-infrared (high frequency) optic modes generally arise from the vibrations of tightly bound clusters within the structures and can generally be recognized as isolated bands in the vibrational spectrum. A method is given for enumeration of the fraction of total vibrational modes which are internal stretching modes. Inelastic neutron scattering data are reviewed to show the magnitude of anisotropy and dispersion of acoustic modes and of dispersion of optic modes in the minerals. The combined infrared, Raman, and INS data show that, excluding the stretching modes of quasi-molecular clusters within the minerals, the optic modes do not appear to follow a simple recognizable distribution, such as a Debye distribution, but are rather uniformly distributed across a broad range of frequencies.

Raman spectra and mid-range and far infrared spectra have been measured on polycrystalline norsethite [BaMg(COs)], barytocalcite IBaCa(COr)r], the high-temperature modification of barytocalcite, huntite [CaMgr(CO.)o], benstonite [CatBa"(CO3)tr], and alstonite [CaBa(COr)r]. Factor-group calculations permit the assignment of the internal modes of the known structures. Effects of ordering in these derivative structures appear mainly in the IR spectra. A degree of translational disorder in the high-temperature modification of barytocalcite and in alstonite appears as a line broadening of the symmetric stretching mode in the Raman spectra.
