Potential of Borage flower aqueous extract as an environmentally sustainable corrosion inhibitor for acid corrosion of mild steel: Electrochemical and theoretical studies

Cerium is a rare earth element that has been widely proposed for the corrosion protection of aluminium alloys (AA). Both cerium salts, Ce3+ and Ce4+, have been used in combination with other compounds to offer synergistic inhibition, however, the inhibitive corrosion mechanism when using Ce4+ with organic compounds is still not clear. In this study, the synergistic inhibition effect of Ce4+ and melamine (M) on the corrosion of aluminium alloy 2024 (AA2024) in 3.5% NaCl solution was investigated. Potentiodynamic Polarization (PDP) and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) techniques were used to study the synergistic effect of different Ce4+/M ratios on the corrosion behaviour of AA2024. The PDP study showed that a combination of 50% Ce4+ and 50% M leads to the lowest corrosion rates, both acting as cathodic inhibitors. Both PDP and EIS results indicated that M or Ce4+ in isolation did not offer effective corrosion protection, while the combination of M and Ce4+ significantly enhances the corrosion protection with a synergism parameter equal to 3.5. SEM and EDX observations confirm the findings from the electrochemical techniques. XPS was used to investigate the mechanism of protection, revealing that the reduction of Ce4+ to Ce3+ occurs during protection of AA2024. A new mechanism of corrosion synergistic inhibition by Ce4+ and organic compounds is postulated where the role of the organic compounds is to enhance the reduction of Ce4+.

A new pyridazine derivative synthesized as an efficient corrosion inhibitor for copper in sulfuric acid medium: Experimental and theoretical calculation studies

A promising double-ligand strategy for the delivery of active corrosion inhibitors by a Zn(II)-based metal-organic framework (Zn-MOF) is developed. Zn-MOF compounds were synthesized by a facile one-pot solvothermal method and characterized. The Zn-MOF is based on the corrosion inhibitor benzotriazole (BTA) and 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (H2FDA) ligand, which is a promising renewable building block alternative to terephthalic or isophthalic acid. The crystal structure and morphology are characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, powder X-ray diffraction analysis (PXRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The synthesized MOF crystallites are in the trigonal space group R3c with the cell parameters in a three-dimensional (3D) anionic framework. Their ability to inhibit the corrosion process of aluminum alloy 2A12 in NaCl solution was also evaluated by immersion tests in solutions with and without a MOF. The postcorrosion analysis was performed by SEM and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Additional information about the inhibition efficiency was obtained by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The results suggest that the as-synthesized MOF can release the inhibitors and form protective layers effectively on the surface of the aluminum alloy. The use of inhibitor-loaded MOF nanocontainers provides promising opportunities for the smart delivery of inhibitors and effective corrosion protection of 2A12 aluminum alloys.

Corrosion inhibition of 2024-T3 aluminum alloy in 3.5% NaCl by thiosemicarbazone derivatives

The effect of adding thiosemicarbazone derivatives on the anticorrosion properties of epoxy primer coatings on aluminum alloy 2024-T3 was investigated. (E)-2-(2,4-dihydroxybenzylidene)hydrazinecarbothioamide (2,4-DHC), (E)-2-(3,4-dihydroxybenzylidene)hydrazinecarbothioamide (3,4-DHC), and (E)-2-(2,3,4-dihydroxybenzylidene)hydrazinecarbothioamide (2,3,4-THC) were supplemented to epoxy primer that is generally used in aircraft paint systems; and its anticorrosion property was examined by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and salt spray test. Field emission scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive x-ray analysis were used to study the surface topology of the coating system. 2,4-DHC and 3,4-DHC doped primer coating exhibits good barrier properties, while 2,3,4-THC doped primer coating exhibits good barrier properties along with active corrosion protection.

Improvement of Anticorrosion Properties of Epoxy Primer Coating on Aluminum Alloy 2024-T3 by Thiosemicarbazone Derivatives

A corrosion inhibitor bis[[3,4-dihydroxyphenylmethylene]carbonothioicdihydrazide] (DCT) was synthesized and used to improve the corrosion resistance of an epoxy based primer coating on AA2024-T3 alloy in NaCl solution. The ability of DCT to inhibit the corrosion was evaluated by electrochemical studies. The compound exhibited an inhibition efficiency of 99%. The surfaces of the corroded specimens were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The anticorrosion nature of the substrate coated with a commercial epoxy-based primer doped with DCT was evaluated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and a salt spray test. The results established not only the ability of DCT to improve the anticorrosion property of the epoxy based primer coating on AA2024-T3 alloy but also a sustained corrosion protection (1000 h) of the alloy.
